That is what I have and irt works well. The other thing to consider is penetration. The penetration is a matter of how tall the plants are going to be and the ability for the light to penetrate all of the bud sites. I have found that topping and LSting help with the 400 watt HPS.

Use this chart which shows coverage based on bulb wattage
I think that chart is off a bit.(looking at 1000 watt coverage only - optimal is 4X4 and can go 8X8 not 10X10)

The 400 should be just fine as already stated by ^^ posters.

in12 ft2 you are looking moreso like this..
Minimum Lighting 25 watts Per Square FootLighting
The minimum recommended lighting for your area is 300 watts
Ventilation
The minimum flow rating of your fan should be 70.0 Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM)
Power Requirements
This setup will require 3.3 amps to be available at all times for safest operation*

Optimum Lighting 40 watts Per Square Foot
Lighting
The optimum reccomended lighting for your area is 480 watts
Ventilation
For optimum ventilation the flow rating of your fan should be around 77.0 Cubic Feet per Minute
Power Requirements
This setup will require 5.2 amps to be available at all times for safest operation*
Maximum Lighting 60 watts Per Square Foot
Lighting
The maximum reccomended lighting for your area is 720 watts
Ventilation
Going this way you will require a fan with a flow rating of at least 91.0 Cubic Feet per Minute
Power Requirements
This setup will require 7.8 amps to be available at all times for safest operation*
Additional Comments
Getting to these points and or over it is highly reccomended the grower use Co2 in their room as your plants will only be able to photosythesise a certain amount of light before needing a Co2 boost to benifit

Where are you getting your info from ??

It's on this link at canniversity click "os grow calculator" at the bottom feed in your dimensions and it provides you feedout info that I just copy pasted for a 12 ft2 room.

http://www.cannaversity.com/cannaversity/idx.php/22/051/Lighting--Electrical/article/How-much-lighting-do-i-need-.html

also there are alsoposts in the FAQ's regarding lighting footprints for bulbs..

https://www.rollitup.org/view.php?pg=faq&cmd=article&id=59

Thought I'd post both, I didn't know which statement you were asking about. Hope that helps.

Yes thats it, just wondering would there be a point on using it or would it just be a wast of energy? When i run a 400w hps

a good rule of thumb to go by: What ever size you think is right, buy the next size up. I have a 400w HPS in a 3'x5' room and it does the job, wish I had the 600w tho, bigger is always better.
