Is a grow worthwhile for personal use

Hi
So I live in ohio where as we all know recreational is going to be legal.
I am excited as I haven't had a supply in many years . My first thought was to just jump in with a tent and start growing my own .
Until I added up the costs ...

Then I looked at Michigan prices and the cost to make a 2.5 hour drive .
Let's take out the joy of self reliance and stick with pure financial aspects.
Let's say I make the drive buy 2 ounces of bud and 10 grams of concentrates and spend say $500 .
That's easily going to be a 3-4 month supply so I'd have to make at least 3 trips before things ramp up enough in ohio to be able to buy locally .
With the price of getting started in a 2x4 grow tent , seeds , nutrients , electricity etc etc etc ..

Is it at all possible to grow it myself and be money ahead ?

Couple things to consider:

It's not all about being money ahead. There is quality and quantity as well. You will know what is in your weed that you grew. You will know what it is that you grew. You will (once you get a grow or 2 under your belt) end up with a surplus and have more than you need.

Another thing to consider is that in the first year or two, there will be such a demand when it is first legalized that prices will most likely be ridiculous and you'll still be making the drive for better prices. There's also the possibility of not being able to get what you want due to the demand.

I'm not real.sure what the penalties, if any, are for carrying across state lines even if it is legal in both states.

You can get into a grow to at least start out and start learning for several hundred bucks and some time. If you aren't the sort of person that's detail oriented or don't enjoy rhat kinda stuff, I'd recommend keep buying. But if you enjoy gardening and the sort, start a grow. You won't be disappointed.

Yes, it’s worth it on many fronts. Beyond the pleasure of growing your own, when you get good at it, the quality of your grow will be better than all but the most expensive stuff you can get at the dispo, maybe even better than that at times.

After the initial investment in gear, you can keep things very economical (even profitable, though I don’t take that route).

I bought a grow tent set up after things went legal in my state. Initial investment - more than I needed to spend, but an all in, pretty high end 3x3 set up for $650. You can get a similar set up for $400 or less. Tent, light, ventilation, etc. If you go with proven seeds, which you should, for the small scale grower you’re looking at $30-50 for three seeds, or around $15 a seed - lots of variables here.

My last grow with the tent, my fourth with the rig from the initial investment, is going to yield around 12 ounces in a 3.5 month period (autoflowers). That’s four seeds (five actually, one went south) for around $60. Soil and basic dry nutes for the four pots, $50. Didn’t monitor electricity, but some expense there. Water free. Pleasure of growing your own and liberating yourself from the dispo or dealer, priceless. But a few hundred bucks at most for 12 ounces is math that works for me.

I'm with the other two, make the investment. I initially started with cheapie equipment, maybe 250 to get my first harvest, then it's just electric and nutes.
The surplus is no joke, I fried most of my summer harvest and still have more than enough weed to keep me going till my next harvest.
Now, if you don't enjoy growing then no, it won't be worth it, but I enjoy the safety of knowing some fuckhead didn't spray it with something.

Go for a bigger tent to start off with. I’d suggest a 4x4. You’re gonna want to spend the cash on a bigger space later on anyways. Be sure not to cheap out on your fans & lights. It cost up front, but if got got a horseshoe with you, it can pay for itself in a run or two with what you would save from spending at a dispo anywhere.
Also there’s a free pack of seeds shipped for Ohio residents on instagram. There’s a thread I posted about it.

Hit a dispo for a little to get you to your first harvest and then only go when you want something new. That's how my wife and I roll. I grow to maintain sanity(most of the time) and when something doesn't turn out we have the dispo for back up.

You can have your cake and smoke it too!

You can buy up to 2.5 ounces , up to 15 grams of that can be concentrate.
Ohio's legal possession is probably going to be close to the same based off what we have for medical already.

So if I do go the grow route a 2x4 is my size limit it needs to fit in my only available closet . . I need to be somewhat discrete and not offend visiting family and I run a small machining business out of my garage .

I grow in my closet without a tent. Using LED's has made it to where I don't need to vent it for heat as of yet. There is light that comes around the sliding doors but most of the on time is during the night when the electricity rates are lower so no one visiting would see it anyway if that was a concern of mine. I'm on a budget also but it is more than worth it compared to the prices at the dispensaries in Cali. I see the initial expenditure as an investment that pays for itself over time. I made a fixture using fluorescent fixtures I picked up for free and replaced the bulbs with T8 LED ones after removing the ballasts. The spectrum isn't great for flowering but it works great for vegging.

Some people enjoy the journey, while some only want to arrive at their destination. What kinda person are you? Do you just want cheaper weed, or do you want to put your stamp on it and have it be your own ? There’s something to be said regarding the DIY process and taking pride in what you do. It’s pretty special to hunt your own strains and to have something truly unique at the end of the day, that no one else does. Personally, I love it and wouldn’t smoke dispo weed, even it was given to me for free. I prefer to DIY, and I enjoy every part of the process, from mixing my soil, to hand watering each plant, and even the trimming.

I’m also a boringly average shitfuck from Ohio and there isn’t a ton of stuff to do here, so it’s a nice hobby too.

How fast do I wanna start .. unless the gov idiots screw things up Dec 7 is the earliest legal day .

Budget ... I have about $400 I can spend and will be able to add a little more over the next couple weeks .

I decided on a tent over just a closet grow for a couple reasons that I hope make sense .
One is that I heat with wood , the closet is in the bedroom furthest from the wood stove . When it gets down to zero outside in the winter the temperature in the room might get down to 65 degrees or so if I get lazy or over sleep and neglect the fire .
I figure the tent with the lights on at night shouldn't have any issues keeping toasty warm .
And I'd like to be able to keep the odor under control .

Sounds like a good plan. LEDs provide heat, but bit not crazy heat. You’re probably good if the ambient temp is 65. My tent is in the basement, which can hit low 60s even high 50s in winter. A little oil heater has been a very effective solution. Something to think about. Good luck!

1g is about 10-15 cents home grown compared to 10-15$ soooo
that is just the cost of growing weed not the manpower price but growers usually love the work
