I can understand how some might be offended by Maher's comment, but I wasn't. Overall, though, I think people get offended too easily.

Why would you be offended when he said it? Hell, you say it hundreds of times each day in your personal life.

For the record: Big fan of Bill. He shouldn't have dropped the n bomb, but firing him is a bit drastic. The word isn't even in my vocabulary, I won't even type it in full.
Caucasians should never mess around with this hideously demeaning word, imho. And for those that prescribe to the "well THEY use it when talking about each OTHER, so why can't I??" mindset, well, you just aren't getting it, to put it as nicely/diplomatically as I can.
I've got family and friends (brown & black folks) that'll use this word in reference to me, consistently, and I'm not into it at all. Makes my skin crawl, frankly.

I think he could have chosen any number of other words to get the same point across. I don't feel anyone should be saying it. I don't give a shit if you're black or not. It's directly tied to one of the worst atrocities in recent history.

Do I think he should be fired? Absolutely. Just as a wake up call to how far toward ludicrous "PC" has gone. If they rehired him the next month, that'd be cool too.

Is it better to deny that it occurred and risk repetition or is it better to use satire to point out the initial cause of the massive division in this country?

Bill knows he's privileged to have the life he has and he has absolutely nothing against black people.

I didn't see the show but from what was quoted I gathered he was talking in the tense of one having to go toil in the Country's Shithouse without the tools, personal or understanding to do the job, something only a plantation owner would do.

I guess we'll find out if HBO wants other Corporations to step up.
