Is Gay Marriage Really That Big Deal?

i think ALL marriage needs to be re-examined.

gay and straight.

people shouldn't have to get married for legal reasons.
thats what marriage is, a legal contract....What do you think we should change about the concept of marriage as a legal contract specifically, what do you mean it should be re-examined...and how would writing in a constitutional amendment that eliminates gays rights to this contract help in re-examining straight marriages?

i feel:

a no vote will keep things as they are.

a yes vote may cause things to be looked at even closer. including straight marriage.
A yes vote will amend our constitution so that gays can't cannot marry, how would that cause straight marriage to be looked at?

i don't think law and marriage should go together. i am torn on which way to go with my vote. to me it is not a gay or straight thing but more all marriage, in a whole.
Well, thats how it is, marriage is a legal contract. And not allowing gays to participate in that contract is not going to make heterosexual marriage be re-examined. All the yes posters says protect marriage, not reexamine marriage.

hope i made sense.

*undecided*
no, sounds like a cop out....

marriage has been around since biblical times.... it was a contract between you and your partner and god.... only recently in human history has it become a legal thing.... it used to be sacred.... now its thrown around more than our local crackwhore...

ok, so then would you be against allowing civil unions the same rights that marriage entitles?

I don't know the laws very well, especially when it comes to marriage (gay OR straight) cuz I'm 23 and totally unconcerned about it

So I have a question about civil unions. I was under the impression that it did NOT give gays the same rights as straight married couples, and that's why gays were pushing for marriage.

If the big issue is the word marriage, people want to keep THAT between a man and a woman, what's wrong with calling gay marriage a civil union, as long as it gives them the same rights?

I think that would be fair. That way the people who feel marriage is between a man and a woman still get to keep it that way, and gays get all the same rights.

bunch of guys, on a boat, middle of the ocean.... sailors been doing it for ages..... maybe not a prevalent as we all think, but still makes for a good laugh... (unless you're in the navy, then its not so funny:mrgreen:)

You shouldn't make fun of the squids. And remember those fleets carry a strong contingent of jar heads.

And no, I was a doggie. In FROG land, Federal Republic of Germany.

But I could get away with such statements easier than civvies. I paid my dues in uniform.

not really sure of my stance on that one.... personally i dont see why a man and woman would live like a married couple for 7 years (civil union here) and NOT get married... whats the big deal? just make it official... but i see where you're going here (only assuming)..... before we start, what rights are we speaking of??? im married; the only right i seem to have gotten is the right to trust my wife and know that she will be there for me as outlined in the vows we spoke in front of god and the little bit of family/friends we had there.... other than that; i lost alot of rights.... i dont have the right to sleep around, no right to treat her like shit, etc...
if all they are looking for is a tax break, well hell, give it to em; but if they want to be called married i would suggest they find a partner of the opposite sex, take and mean the vows, and stick with it....

call it a "civil union" and my qualms are crushed... no more objection from me... but its not a marriage
