is led worth it?

endive are you sure those were grown under leds? they are not fluffy hairy buds, not to mention there is an abundance of trichs on them... you must be hiding an HPS somewhere right?
Hahahahahaha. love the facetism and sarcasm

People keep complaining on how much more LEDs cost, but if someone would take a minute to calculate the cost over the life of the light they would quickly realize that LED is actually alot cheapper than HIDs.

Lets say you paid 400$ for a decent LED light to replace your HPS light.
The HID system costs about 150$ for balast and bulb + another 100$ for a cooltube.
So without any ventilation, AC or electricity costs your already only 150$ down on the led light.
and you can easily spend 350$ per year in electricity costs running a 400W HPS. Plus the replacement of bulbs almost every year.

So IMO the upfront costs of LED is worth it compared to the upkeep costs of HID

Also, I think LED targets more a specific customer that cannot use HID systems rather than tryin to just replace it.

HID people should not hate on LEDs they should embrace it and use it WITH their HID systems. I'm pretty sure a 250W HPS plus another 150 watts of LEDs can be a very good setup for someone who lives where electricity prices or temperatures are higher. I would like to see this kind of setup VS a 400W or 600W HID only system, not only for the bud size/quality but for the maintenance costs and everything.

Man... if I had the money I would spend sooo much on experiments! :P

yo man dudes got it right , they are worth the money for good ones and they can work out to be even cheaper than hps .... i made the switch over a year ago and im never looking back :D

LEDs are worth it, Lumigrow, fero, apollo's, blackstar, if you read other grow journals, do your research, experiment and most important expect to fail with LEDS then you will end up with some QUALITY fine bud in the end, Growing with LED is a learning curve if one does not follow successful LED grow journals, I've lost countless hours scouring this forum and many others reading over grow journals, but they all had one thing in common? LEDS, but when you get the rythm right, you'd be harvesting some dank buds. Best thing is to read through a couple of finished LED grow journals and follow some, and at the same time, save all your money and invest in a good panel, something that someone on here has grown decent bud with.

Pics are of a Bag seed that i've been growing out for about 2 years now, its a skunk/kush/purple smelly plant, very potent smoke, still has about 10 - 14 days to go, bleaching is from having the apollo6 to close which has alot of white LEDS, 100ml floralicious bottle to compare, buds are all the way down to the bottom.

Stay safe, happy growing, and peace.

And what a lovely grow journal you have brother TD, lovely plants, I agree, research is the key, if your a HPS/CFL/MH expert, Im sure the current techniques your implementing now will not work with the LEDS, hence why so many Negative reports about LEDS.Many Lovely grow journals on here with some fine dank buds which are on par and even better than HID grown buds, but it takes time and patients, and you have to know how to read your plants.

There is a grower on ICmag named Verdangreen, averaging something like 1.5grams per watt with good quality LEDS. Dont expect good results from chinese EBAY 90watt ufo's.

Peaace, stay safe.

All of the above posts is exactly why I say give it more time to get LED nailed down. In a few more years most of the older models will be considered worthless if they arent considered that already.

leds are very much so "worth it" even at current prices on some quility models it will be more cost effective to go led just in the simple fact you dont need all the equipment that you do with hps, plain and simple , i mean shit hoods, bulbs(need replacement) , fans, ballasts and the dreaded A/C unit $$$$ i run two very small fans in my tent (5x5) one of which runs through my carbon filter .... besides that i got nothing else and my room stays in the low 80's and its summer time :D

LEDs work. If you don't think LEDs can grow nice big buds, you are stupid -- period. Just because *YOU* can't grow, doesn't mean LEDs don't work :)

how wide is the closet? i'd recommend going with 1 240w blackstar. reasonable price, one will cover your whole closet if it's not a walk in. You can grow as many plants as you have space for.

F all of you LED haters. F u up your LED hating bungholes :)

If one already has the ballasts, hoods, and cooling system in place, these cost nothing to maintain. The only ongoing expense is bulbs and electric. The savings in power and bulbs isn't enough to justify the high initial costs of LEDs. LEDs may be attractive to someone just starting out, but not so much for those already growing under HIDs.

Well... I would like to disagree ill have to post a pic of my led grow.. but on the other hand.. I did go out and get 1000w hps just to try to put it over the top.. Which Im glad I did. even though I have yet to see the full results.. I see them already just with adding it in 1/4 the way threw flower on a clone of the last.. its only been a week too
If you have a 1000w HID on them, the LED isn't needed. You may not realize it, but you're making an argument AGAINST LEDs, not for them

How much electricity and bulbs will it cost you to run this in the next 5-10 years? I`m pretty sur a LED panel will cost less than that...

But I agree with you, if I already had my HID installation, it would take a pretty awesome led panel to convince me to make the switch, considering 75% of the lights out there are rubbish...

Agree if you've already got 600w+ that is well ventilated and not killing your electric.. no reason to switch... well if you're not afraid of infrared :) but if you are < 600w or don't have good ventilation and don't wanna fuck with it and want a lower electric bill it's definitely something to consider. No reason to switch if you're dialed in led's aren't going to grow bud magically better than HID

I'm not trying to convince anyone to switch to led from hid, just the led haters that leds aren't shit. And I don't think 75% is accurate on bad lights... 75% way overpriced maybe... and only one major maker i know i'd call rubbish... some people just do one led grow, didn't have great results and blame the led and that is not always the case. Some people can't grow for shit :)

I think the risk of getting a shit light was a lot higher a couple years back than today as well.

I have really tried to stay out of this conversation about L.E.D.S. I personally grow right now in a 4x8x7 tent and use 2 L.E.D.S. that I had made for me.I grow and flower 8 plants per run and have gotten no less that 550 grams per plant. Now mind you I top and super crop my plants like crazy and stake them out wide, but even my bottom bud is still nice and dense, not popcorn. I run 2 L.E.D.S. in the tent and they are duel spectrum each. They are equal to 1400 watts and put out 210k lumen. The penetrating power is awesome compared to H.I.D'S. I had them made and cost me $349 each. I didn't have to buy ducting and don't have to worry about heat issues. I don't have to have an a/c, inline fans or anything else that has to do with H.I.D. Not to mention that my electric bill only goes up $28 for the month. Not going to lie, that is the best part. You don't have to buy expensive L.E.D.S. systems. Just find someone that knows their stuff and see if they can make you one. I am getting rid of my tent at the end of the month and running a 13x13x8 room full of the L.E.D.S. when he has them finished. Right now it is in the 80's-95's here in Portland and my garage is nice and cool (its concrete). But I have seen all my friends that grow go out and but a/c units and sometimes 2 just to keep their temps down. I suppose in the winter it is going to be good because the heat will warn the room, but I'll pass for that.

That's great results mk3! How many total watts are your leds? do you know the wavelengths used and in what ratio? Any idea what brand led chips were used? I'd love to see some pics of both the lights and plants!

Wait a minute... Something smells funny.

You got 550 grams each from 8 plants, totaling 4400 grams (550x8=4400), with 2 ufo looking lights that cost $350 each?

You grew almost 10 pounds with 2 UFOs?

Am I missing something?

L.E.D.S are on par with any light out there. I use them only in both my flower room and veg rooms. I use T5 for clones. I am in Oregon and it is hot as hell up here right now. I have no fans except the ones on the wall to move air. I have a guy make all my lights and he only charges me $349 for each one and they do both veg and bloom. I just cropped and my yields were far better than a friend and his 1000's. I don't have c02 yet but I pulled no less than 550 grams dry from each plant after it was cured and ready. My plants are about 4 ft round also. View attachment 2292402View attachment 2292403View attachment 2292405View attachment 2292406View attachment 2292407

Here are as many specs as I have at the moment. He currently make these lights. He have done the research and put the time into the lights to make them better then whats out there on the market today. His system uses normal LED's with high MCD ratings. The veg spectrum uses 110 L.E.D.S and the flower spectrum uses 120 L.E.D.S. Each led is rated at 15000 MCD, With the proper conversions each LED is about 2.5 watts. When he did the conversions of MCD to lumen it came to 150k or more. A 1000watt system pumps about 100k lumen so mines better then that. Super bright LED's make the penetrating power very high. The other upside to my system over the UFO's that are everywhere is mine in using normal L.E.D.S, that means if you wanted to you could get 1 inch off of a plant and it would produce no heat. Super nice system and i will end this by leaving specs below

Spec's

150k lumen

Dual cycle built into 1 system

No heat produced

True 3 amp system

Mounting bolts for hanging or you can remove them and angle it as it has a 90 swivel

super bright LED's for high penetrating power

The L.E.D. panel that I got are anything but "ufo". I put only 4 plants under each one, and like I said, I top numerous times and super crop lots. The guy that makes them does not use 1 watt LED diodes like the "ufo " ones do. He mixes 3 and 5 watt LEDS to get the color penetration that he wants, this way I don't have to have the LED right on top of the plant. I am able to use it about 18 inches off the top of my canopy. 4198 Total dry cured weight.

Am I missing something?
Yes, you are. Each panel is 1400 Watts, so combined I am getting roughly 2800 Watts total.

Puff here are some different pics. These things are huge panels just round. IMAG0253.jpgIMAG0254.jpg He hand makes every one. IMAG0255.jpgIMAG0256.jpgIMAG0257.jpg

120x2.5w equals 300w. So you got 4400 grams with 600w, with a UFO pcb and a Honeywell fan case?

The veg spectrum uses 110 L.E.D.S and the flower spectrum uses 120 L.E.D.S. Each led is rated at 15000 MCD, With the proper conversions each LED is about 2.5 watts.
