I'm thinking just is.

Think of it this way. The pebbles get wet. The water evaporates. Leaves the nutes behind.

what are those orange balls called and what be thier purpose?

Its called Hydroponics, the balls are called hydroton, basically baked clay balls. They serve as the medium/ anchor for the roots to hold the plant up.

I know what they are too! Got them rolling for a flood/drain veggie patch in the dinning room. ( I can just wander in and graze. no dishes!)

(pebbles types easier then hydroton and passes the spell check too)

yeah no worries man, i find i get more salt buildup with hydroton, or more i can see at least, just flush if it worries you and remember to check ph again after you change solution and run it through because that stuff will raise the ph
