the reality is, even an annonmysing proxy is pretty irrelevant. if they want to know who you are, believe me, they will find out, proxy or no proxy, subpoena the RIU owner, get the IP's, they have very clever IT folk who will soon unmask your real IP, they will pull in your service provider and soon they will have your name and address. just look at all the folks who are in the p2p business using proxys still getting raided! (and if you have posted already on RIU with your real IP, using a proxy is definately a waste, as your real IP address will already be logged with the posts you just made above!!!!!)
my advice is dont make your post interesting enough for someone to want to follow up on. if you grow 200 plants, just show 2 plants etc. even private forums where its invite only and is shut off from the public isnt 100% safe. its the internet. its public. just be sensible about what you post , (age, location, anything that can ID you etc) and be sure someone is always scouting around looking to build profiles on members.

i don't think the RIU servers log IP's, been discussed on other threads
why would they? no value to do so
however, there are other servers in the chain of communication, and they will contain IP's
but if the server is outside of the US boundaries? depends on the country, company operating server
for the most part, even DEA can't get that info easily
NSA probably can, but at this point we're talking some pretty heavy effort for closet grows
now lets take it up a notch, using SSL which is what i do, data is encrypted, you'll see a https suffix when SSL is used
who can break this encryption is a topic in itself, NSA maybe
but maybe not, SSL is the product of 1000's of Phd's over many years, many smart eyes review the security of this protocol
NSA fought the introduction of strong encryption for many years, but it was like the internet itself, they were overwhelmed
so an IP address address is not in itself evidence of a crime, visiting a grow site is not illegal(yet)
this illustrates why sites like these are just not a high priority, way too much work for skimpy rewards

good point, there is some logging, hadn't thought of that
my guess is they will finger the IP of a trouble maker, and keep those IP's

What a bunch of crap- I mean, DEA staking out a Hydro store and then following the customers home- I take it they don't have medical marijuana in your region? I live in MT, we have MM here, I have never heard of such a punk ass thing as the DEA staking out a Hydro store. Like, just cuz you go to a store and look at shit, that's probable cause to detain yer ass an rough you up in the process??? Name someone 'Higher up' or else? Sounds like grounds for a lawsuit to me...Too bad you couldn't video it w/ yer cell phone or something. I can just see the DEA roughing up some college botany professor who grows hydro tomatoes at home, happens to have long hair and getting the shit sued out of them for roughing up a college professor. How stupid.

If you are really scared and you live in America... You can go to your local library or your local community college and use the computers there. Wipe the keyboard afterwards and the chances of you getting caught are almost zero...

If the DEA busts somebody they are investigating, for 2 plants instead of 200, (illegal grow not med), they don't care.

They will just turn the evidence over to the local pigs; another life ruined and brownie points for them.

Hey guys I just feel like I should chime in here as I have talked to some lawyers about this myself, I am a legal grower who has a growlog on here, ofcourse any lawyer with a brain will advise you NOT to post on here but lets look at some of the facts.

1) Anything on here that you post will be deemed as 'heresay' what this means is you can not prove the person who actually made the posts because it could be anyone especially in these days of WIFI, so if your worried about this you need to not create anything that could be used to link you specifically to postings, so use this to your advantage, I mean they can really stretch some things and try to identify stuff you purchased in your financial records with stuff in pictures but remain firm on your right to remain silent and/or the fact that you did not make such postings.

2) Do not post from the growup EVER and do not order grow equipment to the growop, better yet use a prepay credit card to begin with.


main thing just use those two things to your advantage and it will help you out a great deal, keep your postings on the 'heresay' side as much as you can and dont post from the growop and you have a strong case when it comes to postings on here and it will likely be dismissed as evidence once you get to court (it wouldnt stop them from getting a warrant thou) but remember that they can get a warrant on RIU one day and then they can find out who you are if RIU is in the united states so be ready for a court case because it very well could happen and you are taking a risk but risk is the way of life my friend. Fight for the marijuana plant with boldness and one day we will save it and win this war.

I can assure you if you use a proxy you're making the IP address irrelevant. The https thing is important, as previously mentioned. If you use encryption and a proxy, they're fucked, not you:

I'm a legal medical grower in Cali. I stay within plant limits & I'm not big enough for the Fed's to want me.

The truth is (baring a few exceptions) most of us aren't big enough to bother with. Safety in numbers, there's too many of us!

Not a bunch of crap they regularly do this, there was a bust here in CO several months ago where they actually reported on the news that the DEA followed the growers from a hydro store to the grow house (that was their mistake, take note)

and just a few weeks ago the local popo busted 7 grow ops by following the growers from a dispensery, yes that's right, because of the new pending legislation here in CO to change how everything works. True they jumped the gun (since the bill has not been signed yet) but gave us a look at things to come

I have a second father thats a criminal defense lawyer... Says every case that comes across his desk is a follow from a hydro store... There is a definate connection in KCMO between hydro store and Feds...
