Is there a way to make my inline fan quieter?

I have a 6" Vortex inline fan (449 cfm) for my grow room. It is also on a speedster on the low setting. My grow room is real small for that big of a fan... Is it possible to quiet the fan itself? If so how?

ive heard suspending the fan itself by bungee cords or using rubber washers will reduce it somewhat

The problem isn't really vibration, it's more the hum from the motor that you can hear through the floor in the room above it

wrap it with insulation or build a box around it filled with insulation or foam. it will muffle some of the sound.

Hey there - noob here, and I'm shopping for an in-line, probably a 4". I've got a mini-hydro hut and I'm wondering if some brands of fan are quieter than others.

btw, love the insulation idea.

Thanks for the input. I started to work on it today. I had some egg crate foam and some one inch thick styrofoam sheets that are like 3'x6'. I tried to insulate better in between the joyces above the fan and I wrapped the fan with the foam. I think I had minimal success so far. I need to build a box for the fan I think.

The fan is setup on the outside wall of the grow room, I just cut a 6" hole to put the flange through and then I mounted the bracket on the joyce above. Then the carbon filter is right on the fan also on the outside of the room with the air being sucked out of the room, if that helps any...

oh you means the ones that get loud, than louder and louder after years?

oh yea those!
do they? they have 3yr manufacturer warranties.. maybe just RMA them every 2 3/4 years? heh

no seriously is that a common problem? i just ordered one. even if it's only "whisper" quiet or whatever for a year or two it's worth the money for my situation.

Well after some more work I have figured out that the noise that is really the problem is the hum from the motor which is being caused by my fan speed controller. I bought the speedster inline fan speed controller from my local hydro shop.

So now what I need to do is to find a fan speed controller that isnt a variable one like the speedster and one that just has the high, medium, and low settings. The ones they sell at the local hardware store aren't beefy enough for my 6" vortex (100 watt). I found that out by blowing up a power strip after I tried to switch my fan to the "low" setting...

Anyone use anything like that currently or know where to get one? There are plenty of "no-hum" fan speed controllers but only for like ceiling fans that I can see. I need one rated for more than 1.5 amps.

I installed the FV-30NLF1 340cfm fan in my attic above the grow room.. and it really is silent! And it moves alot of air. I set the box on a thick towel to absorb any vibration but there was barely any to begin with. I guess I'l have to wait and see if it gets louder with time but for right now, I am very satisfied! :)

You think it comming through your floor is bad. Try sleeping in the same room as 3 150mm inline fans. I just put up with it. But wetmango and whatapothead both had some valuable ideas. I might have some better sleep a head of me...

Get that shiny foam board from home depot and build a little box around it and than suspend it from bungees.
