Is This A Nitrogen Deficiency?

Hello everyone,
Recently my plants have started to turn yellow around the edges of the leaves. I've only fertilized them once (2 days ago) and that was only at 1/4 strength. It looks like nitrogen deficiency to me (the fertilizer probably hasn't taken effect yet) but I was hoping to get a confirmation from a more experienced grower.

Also, besides the yellowing, how do they look? This is my first grow. Thanks!

Hello that is nute burn NO nutes yet give it some time. Other then that they look good. Plain water/RO would be better. Good luck. Jay

Thanks for the quick reply!

The thing is they started doing that before I added any nutrients and I'm using a seed starter soil with no nutrients or time released fertilizers.

Ya dude water only and get ready to transplant in a few days. And keep watering let the soil do its work first. I would say they look good but they are burnt, flush it out now bout 2times the pot size do it slow and then you should be good.

Oh that could be overwatering then or light to close. I would transplant and just water.
more info? light?

Right now I'm using 2 23 W CFL's per plant and they are about 2-3 inches from the plants. The temperature in the cabinet tends to hover around 30-35C (a bit warm but I'm working on adding more ventilation).

Also, when I looked at them this morning, I noticed that the most discolored leaves have red stems. Isn't that a sign of nitrogen deficiency? I'm just trying to figure out if it's nute burn or a deficiency so I know when to add nutrients.

Well the heat may be your problem try to shoot for and that you nuted too early back off the heat like you said, and flush them......Purple stems yes can be def. but also can be the strain. How long has it been in that cup exactly?.....Cause I have grown pretty decent sized seedlings in party cups(2weeksmax) and always just watered and when I transplant I'm still watering only for some time till I see roots popping out of its final pot. Which happens quicker than you think/

They've been in the cups for about 3 weeks now. Could it really be nute burn though? They were already starting to look yellow around the edges the day before I added anything.

3 weeks is quite some time for party cups and I notice they aren't filled with soil all the way........Oh we didn't discuss your medium for your seedlings what is it? Feel like a dumbass for not asking should be first question, It does make a diff.
Anyway though 3weeks is plenty transplant them you are starting 2 slow grow and I bet you roots spindling at the bottom looking for food.....let them eat new soil and correct themselves. And water only for now!
If on city water let it bubble chlorine out for I think 24hrs for not sure cause I'm Well water(edit) but my PPM straight water is 250 and it has been working great.
Just 2 clear up the party cup thing you can finish plants in them but you need 2 now how 2 I've read some threads on here but never have done it.

ya it was probably a combination of being in the cup that long and roots have hit the bottom with no where to go and the nutes if not a prob now will be if u don't transplant i killed 5 plants giveing them nutes b4 i moved them to a bigger pot and they really weren't big enough i can show u a pic of the only 1 of 6 that is still alive it is 2 months old and not much bigger than what u have there i not sure how much longer it will live

this plant is over 2 months old should be dead but i kept it in the light and hoped it might live cause the seed came from some kush

For soil I'm using Miracle Grow Seed Starter. I don't think the plants are root bound yet. The cups are transparent and not a lot of roots have started collecting at the bottom yet, but I can see a few.

i would transplant them into 4 " pots and start a light feeding schedule IMO you could be having ph issues you need to get it around 6.5 and maintain it there how damp is the soil in cups the yellowing could be from to much watering as well does cups have drains in them let soil dry up re pot and give them food

Okay, I'm new but....my plants looked like that in the cups. As soon as I put them in the pots they perked right up big time. I guess they want and need to stretch their legs.

Also - as far as the clear cups are concerned....I use Solo plastic cups. I put them in the clear cups, so I can see root development, but then I put the clear cups into the colored cups - I used the blue ones. So I can lift the clear out of the blue to see the roots, then I can put them back in the blue so that the roots don't "see" the light.

As for the soil having enough nutes, I use my own compost soil for my outdoor plants and no shit I've had them get nute burn from translplanting them into the soil and they literally went near a month without any need for feeding. BTW Miracle Grow blows donkey dick

Just read the posts a little closer. If they looked like that before you fed them, how can it be nute burn?
If they're that small with very little roots, how do they need transplanting?

They're starving! Yes, that's nitrogen def. The purple stems are phosphorous def. Tiny roots are probably from potassium def. The reddish brown spots are cal/mag def. FEED DEM BITCHES!

Transparent cups, bad idea. Do like novice11 suggested, opaque outer cups.

plant is way to small for the pot size its in causeing prob major stress related symtoms you guys got to realize slowly working pot size up as plant gets bigger and root system grows

heres pics from a 3 to 4 " clone in a 4" pot transfered into a 10 " pot 2 weeks later goin into flowering @ 16 - 18 " height there was no stress related issues plant just took off

Pretty sure you don't wanna be dumping nutes on them right now. Needs to transplant with good soil with good ratios.

My plants looked just like that.I repotted in to sum "staygreen" cheap soil with very low nutes and just gave it water for awhile (like a week r two)and they took off.fed it after two weeks 1/4 strength n they're doin great now. Get a ph tester if u don't have one already,it'll save u a lot of trouble

red/purpling stem - if it is a deficiency - is a phosphorus deficiency

those plants prolly didn't need any nutes and that prolly is nute burn
i would prolly get me a dish of plain water, dump the seedling with rootball into my loosely opened hand and gentlt wash it side to side in the dish until i had just the roots and plant in my hand then replant and apologize

once your plant perks back up, move those cfls to like 1 - 1 1/2 inches off the plant and keep a fan on low right at the top of the light
don't give yyour plants nutes until the cotyledons(little round leaves) have more or less died and shriveled
