Is this a sign of overwatering?

I've been having a problem with my 1st grow. I am using miraclegro organic potting soil and some bagseed in a 15x22x30 box with 6 27watt 6500k CFL's. I'm not sure if I should add more light or what to do, I don't water too much. Could the pot size be the problem, I have roots coming out the bottom holes. I am using fox farm grow big nutes and see a little burn and have toned it down since.

Looks more like your pH is off than anything.

They are far too young to begin nutrients, in my opinion. I would flush out your soil and let them grow without nutrients for another week or two. Then start them up again.

They don't look too bad, but you need to check your pH so we can ensure you aren't locking up your macronutrients or micronutrients.

Do you have a pH tester?

No, I don't even know how to test the pH. Should I be testing the water or the soil or both? How would I go about doing it? I have some pH strips where I work.

Test both...very beneficial.

Know soil pH right now is more important because your plants need some attention. Then from there, we can figure out how to balance out your water so your soil pH will go down:)

I just did a quick search of the forum and unfortunately "pH" doesn't work in the search function. Is there an ultimate newbie pH thread around that can teach me how to test and how to bring the pH into range after testing? Obviously i am quite lost....lol

Can I test soil pH with test strips? How?

pH is a test of the acidity of the soil .... pH 6.5-6.8 is ideal for MJ and a lot of other plants ..e.g. tomatoes and roses

You can buy soil pH test kits at garden supply ... also pH test paper - to test the water ... cheap pH testers are unreiliable .. and good pH test istruments need to be calibrated often ..... test strips are very reliable .. and come in different test ranges ... test soil and adjust ... many tap waters are pH adjusted to near 7 .... 7.0 is neutral pH ... (7.0= neither acidic nor basic) .... distilled water is 7.0 .... bottled water is near 7.0 .......

if you know the pH is OK then you can think about other reasons things are not going well ... over ferts and overwatering are OFTEN the reason it doesn't go well

You can test the water before you put it on your plants .. then use another test strip on the runoff

don't try to adjust soil too quickly .. and don't overwater just to change pH haha

a lot o' people have issues with Miracle Gro ... when u replant ... check into a good organic soil and put small gravel in the bottom of the pot to insure good drainage !

I noticed this morning that there are roots starting to show at the top of the soil, I am debating about re-potting them into a larger 1 gallon pot. there are also roots coming out of the holes in the bottom of the pot.
