Is this true??

I was just told that a 1000 watt mh bulb isnt good for veg because its to much lumens....can you even have such a thing as to many...she is deciding to swap out her 600w hps for some t5...is she retarded or is it just me?

Haven't heard that 1000 watters are bad for vegging....I've got one but only use it for flowering....I too use T5 for seedlings/vegging...

Hmmm, sounds a little strange to me. I have vegged for 30 days under T5 systems with great results, they just did not "do it" for flowering. I would think that she could veg under the T5's as long as they do not get too big. The floros do not penetrate well. Not sure about the "too much" stuff. Seems silly. If you notice a problem, raise the light a little...problem solved.

It's not so much about the amount of lumens per say, because a 1000w mh only has 20,000 more lumens than a 600w hps, it's that chlorophyll activity is much higher under a blue spectrum light like a metal halide, thus it's much better for vegging.

Ya i know. She is swapping out her 600w hps flower and using t5 to flower....shes insane. I was like im gonna put an air cooled hood and 1000w mh in. She told me 1000w was to much. That a 400w better...i thougt she was smarter then this. She also told me weed ripens TWICE! Its hairs will turn brown then back to white then brown again...thats when the buds done....and ya...her shit is always small and barely potent...yet she thinks its king shit...never seen a top cola bigger then maybe a hot dog...if that.....she is insane.

I do not think she sounds insane, just ignorant of cannabis horticulture. She certainly has no idea how lighting works. Stick to what your thoughts on lighting and let her mess her crop up. As long as it does not harms anything you are growing, it will be a great lesson in why a little REAL study is important. Right now she sounds like she is just guessing and that is the best way fail. Failure can be a great teacher. My thought would be to grow side by side, but separated areas. Then compare the results so she can witness for herself how her technique is no good. You can grow 3 or 4 plants out under a 400 watt bulb and yield a few ounces (dried) per plant. Let her yield her 1/4 ounce.

The only reasons I can think of that she is afraid of "big lighting" is either paranoia that some FLIR equiped copter is going to notice. Another would be she has burned out a plant or two trying to run a 400 or 600 without proper ventilation.

In a way she is right about the "ripens twice" thing, but not for the reason she seems to be alluding to. I have had a sativa with about 75% of the hairs changed put on a second spurt of fresh flowering. More white hairs appeared, but the ones that had changed stayed changed.

No she is insane....she has been doing this FOR 12 YEARS...so my young ass apparently doesn't know anything because she has been doing it for so long...her way or the high way. Ya I see her yield and im like damn.....that's it off 4 plants? She gets MAYBE 2 or 3 ounces OFF 4 PLANTS IN HYDRO! I have showered her one of my buds that was the size of a 1 liter bottle...like I said hers are the size of a twinkie or a hot dog...it's sad. Plus she has NO idea how a grow room should be set up....she doesn't EVEN HAVE REFLECTORS ON HER BULBS! It's the most ghetto shit I have ever seen...but that doesn't matter because even with CFL'S she could be growing better shit if she listened to someone who knows his shit. Damn it's sad.

I can understand some more white hairs coming in but CHANGING COLORS BACK AND FORTH is not true...trust I have tried to re-educate her...but like MOST older growers they all think they are right and infallable even though I have books etc showing otherwise. She is my step mother and has M.S. and is a medical patient so FLIR lights aren't an issue. She is just ignorant and refuses to listen because of my "age" ya I know im 22 bitch but damn at least im not stupid.

Keep the 1000 watter 40 inches or so above the canopy, just right for seedlings and young plants. Maybe 2500 lumens or so. Then let the plants grow to the light till the gap is about 30-32 inches then begin to raise the light maintaining that space.

Tell her that. I'm straight on my grows. I know my FACTS. She listens to hear say and myths and rumors...she can't back anything up with FACT. Which is the problem. She refuses to believe the truth. I was just making sure I wasn't misinformed somehow.

You should get 8 to 10 ounces off 4 plants. If she is getting less than an ounce and a half per plant, then she is doing it wrong...regardless of how long she has been at it.

If I were you, I would just ignore her and do your my thing. Let her continue her garbage grows and just drop the subject. She sounds like she has her mind made up and you will never change it. As long as your efforts are not messed with by hers, you should be fine.

Ha I don't even think I'd want her glancing at my grow...she'd start taking shit apart and cutting down vegging plants because they were "ripe"..lol. Ya I know she is doing it VERY wrong...im not even going to list her setup...it'll just make you angry.

I can honestly tell you that I do not get too surprised at anything. Usually it is newbies that do not want to invest the time to study and are amazed at the shit grows. It does not sound like she has been growing for very long, but likes to talk up her game. If she had actually been growing for more than a few crops...I would figure she would have fucked up and got it right enough to learn something at some point.

Anyway, think of this way. You have a MIL that at least tokes. Sounds like she cannot grow for crap, but at least she is not afraid of it.

I am not so sure age is the main factor, some people get in their rut and don't want any change. It worked for her 12 years ago, so instead of keeping with the times she is stuck.

I on the other hand have been growing for over 30 years, learn something new every day and love it...that's why I am here
