hey,
im jus looking for sum tips to setup my outdoor grow on an island.I grew there last year but didnt have to much sucess due to lack of attention(didnt have a decent boat) and i found the soil was very sandy and dry. Other than that i think it would make an excellent grow area.

Pros---very private(unless you are a heatbag and get seen by fisherman), lots of small green bushes/shrubs to blendplants into, direct sunlight, easy access to water.

cons---having to transport plants by boat kinda scares me, sandy and dry soil, risk of being seen by fisherman/coast guard out there, more of a hassle to launch a boat etc when plants need attention..

Let me know what you think???

i think its worth it if you wana grow some good sensimilla.

i dont have to launch a boat or nothing of that nature but i have to take nice long...i mean long walk to see my babies and its worth every step in the end..even if its just for the experence.

srry no pics yet since i havent been out there yet.. Any thoughts on what to do about the lean soil.. only thing i can think of right now is dig holes and back fill with premimum soil, but its kinda a hassel to hual boat loads of soil out there lol

yes it would be trouble to do that. i would just spend the little bit of money on a coule bags of Medium. and take those over those by boat.

I would transplant the plants into big pots with good soil and plant those in the ground with the pot still on it. That or dig out holes and fill with good soil mixed with a little of the surrounding sand. I'd also use granular dry fertilizer to feed over time so you don't need to feed them as often. Is watering an issue? How big is this island?

ya thats prolly what ill end up doin.. I only really checked to soil in a few spots and it was sandy by the looks of it. Im gonna hopefully go out there this weekand and ill try to find sum nice rich soil spots maybe near the march/swamp.

Watering is not an issue all i need to do is bring a few 20 litre water jugs and i can fill them up on the shore, it is a fairly large island(im not really good with area so im not to sure about numbers), no houses on it i dont think

I meant more in the sense that does it keep enough natural water or would you need to go often. If it gets water alright then using time released fertilizer (carefully though, can burn plants bad) would make it so you hardly need to be there much and less work/attention.

yup thats the thing im trying to figure out the most--how to keep them really healthy without being out there all the time.. last year i found the soil was really dry but i was a real hot/dry summer too. I think theres a few marshes/swamps out there aswell so the soil should be pretty moist around there. found out that the island is around 70 acres total

You could mix vermiculite in, I believe that's suppose to help retain moisture to an extent. I'd also mulch the plants with something like coco coir or something with good water retention. Mulching also keeps the soil cooler during hot days and therefore slows evaporation.

whats the best soil to back fill the holes with?? i heard a good method is to dig a hole put in a black garbage bag and fill with soil..

if it's salt water, that becomes a major logistics problem.....if it's fresh water, I've often though of suspending hempy buckets in the rushes, or brush...especially where fishermen or duck hunters wouldn't be.it'd be constantly watered, and ther would be a lot less people likely to see it.

I'm assuming when you say island you're talking about a tiny,tiny island on a lake. I mean what kind of a Banana would fill his water jugs at a shoreline unless it was a lake? Nobody in their right mind would grow with salt water!
So if you want help & ideas brah, you're gonna have to be a little more open about your location etc.,etc...

I'm assuming when you say island you're talking about a tiny,tiny island on a lake. I mean what kind of a Banana would fill his water jugs at a shoreline unless it was a lake? Nobody in their right mind would grow with salt water!
So if you want help & ideas brah, you're gonna have to be a little more open about your location etc.,etc..

I suggest that perhaps you should grow closer to your home base. You sound like you're not gonna be able to check your patch often. Don't expect miracles if you can only tend to them once a week, or so.

Bottomline , you're gonna have to pack in some good soil. Pick your spot, and go dig your holes one week or two before you plant.
