How are you filtering it war? It looks in those pics like the color of the oil isn't bad. It does seem like it looks kinda granulated in some spots, so maybe there is still a little impurity in there and thats why it gets darker when you scrape it. As I've improved my filtration I've noticed a big difference in the clearity and smoothness of the oil.

speaking of filters...

how long does it take for winterized everclear solution to start warming up and the plant waxes start becoming "uncoagulated" while filtering?

ive been doing my filtering outside of the freezer...which takes about 10 mins. by the end, the mixture is not really cold anymore.. is it possible for plant waxes to go through the filter if theyre not frozen?

would it help to freeze the filter too and get it nice and cold?

I put it threw a tea strainer to grab the big pieces, then I ran the liquid thru two standard coffee filters and then I actually ran the liquid one more time thru two coffee filters cause I thought I some plant material. I usually only do the coffee filter once using only one filter, this time twice using two filters.

Vac I have noticed much less sediment in the bottom of the container if I filter in the freezer. It takes alot longer, but I usually try to just go do something else. It also seems like the more filtering the better really. I've been filtering twice with 3 coffee filters stacked each time, and keeping it in the freezer the whole time. It really seems to be getting cleaner then previous runs. FYI I'm just sharing results, and brainstorming on how to help and in no way am I saying this is the best or only way or anything like that.

In my opinion......ethanol dissolves these waxes when hot the hotter it is the less you have to use to dissolve everything. Because solubility is so strongly influenced by temperature even a few degrees will allow a significant amount of waxes to fall back in solution... I do the entire process in the freezer, the quick wash along with all filtering ....

Filtering in my opinion is possibly the strongest influence on the quality of your oil, any particulates aren't cannabinoids. They prevent thc etc from sticking together properly, when you evap your oil and concentrate those particles that's the reason, the only reason oil changes color when collected and is no longer transparent.. grinding your bud or excessive drying are the biggest factors but a paper coffee filter will only remove down to a certain size particle. Doubling or tripling is effective but still.....
again just my thoughts on the process, I try to have perfect oil. I mean theoretically even .1 degrees warmer will allow more wax to fall back in solution...

I believe collectively, minimizing every factor even slightly will improve your product greatly

interesting thoughts, I figured so...cant wait to try the next batch in the freezer.... if I can clear a spot.

only problem with that is I dont like how much oil the filter soaks up, and doesnt release... and when im doing smaller runs... its pretty significant even with just 1 filter it seems like... 3 or 4 and it would take .5g worth of oil away from my total, which has already been hit very hard... oz turned into 6g which is turned into 5g after winterizing.

ever tried double or triple winterizing??

Well because of my pour through method I use a lot of iso relative to the oil content once evapped. The coffee filter only soaks up so much liquid, inherently I lose less cannabinoids...but I've never felt I lost anything in the filter. Each time I make oil I swap out coffee filters when they get clogged (fill one let drain then get a new) I pour iso through the filters at the end in a separate dish as re pouring through seems to knock loose trapped particles.... doing it this way I feel loss is pretty minimal maybe a dab..

Because it works on the solubility of ethanol the first wash will remove most but there will always be some that can be picked up in a second. I think anymore than that and it would probly do nothing if further degrade and lose terpines by processing again... I font have any actual facts or studies but I'm sure you can picture in your head a sort of first pass effect.....

In my opinion with a good winterization only 1 is necessary but 2 can be used for best oil

heres a thought... what about rinsing those filters with everclear, or ISO. and saving that ISO/everclear to use to run your next batch... after all, the next filter will catch any possible extra plant waxes that you washed out. but then again.. is it really worth it for what, 2 dabs maybe?

ive often stuffed my filters back into the butane extraction tube to prevent blow backs of crumbs... it cleaned all the oil off the filter, but made me wonder... did I just wash all those plant waxes back into the oil? does it really matter if youre planning on winterizing it though?

I thought I read someone (I think guzias) did a double winterized run.. cant remember if there was anything in the filter.

I know some guys that sell me full melt.. they played around and dissolved theirs in everclear and filter, evap, smoke, and scrape... it was pretty nice oil, and they boasted an 80% return. i told them about freezer method and they put it in the freezer... for 10 mins!!!! didnt pull out any plant waxes obviously and didnt think I would be able to either. I did the same.. dissolved 2 grams, filtered it, froze it, and filtered it again and there was def some plant waxes in it, its not a ton smoother though. now that I think... not sure what that has to do with anything here...

carry on.

I don't do runs often enough to save the iso and filter oil for next run.. keeping cannabinoids in solution tends to degrade them fairly quickly. 10 times faster giving thca a half life of only 13 days..because of light... if you could store it properly its better I guess

Www.tandfonline.com 00450610903258144.PDF ....... I've quoted this article many times, time in relation to degredation...
If anyone knows how to throw up pdfs and them work as links, that'd be cool. I only like reading pdfs

But anyway this is a great read in my opinion even if you have to Google it, I read it quite often to refresh my memory.

....but yea it should all be pulled after 1 filtration or 1 winterization for the most part. The more waxes you start off with the more is able to fall back in. A second wash should remove near everything... damn man there a word for this...I'm just gonna call it a first pass effect for now though I realize that doesn't really apply

Yea I actually found that article while attempting to prove thc didn't degrade to cbn.. it does indeed show cbns steadily rose independent of thc levels in a chilled environment. Suggesting it comes from a chemical reaction or metabolic process within.......I love reading about these things lol

finally got some results!

here is my 99iso VS 190 everclear run, all same input material

top two pictures left to right:
7grams in -1/2 cup of iso with heated evap,
14 grams in- 1 cup of iso with natural evap,
14 grams in- 1 cup of everclear with natural evap

the dark little glob (7 gram run) had heated evap, and, then i scraped, and let sit on parchment for a couple days.

the other two 14 gram runs were exactly identical in procedure of extraction . both rinsed for about a minute, light shaking.. both evaporated most of solvents within 24 hours,.. i let sit for about 2 more days...

i then gathered all three oils, and placed onto parchment, (top left picture)

purged at 107F for about 3 hours, came back to this :] (top right)
the iso 7 gram run is pretty much wax/budder
the iso 14 gram run is shatter
the everclear 14 gram run is shattercomb!

the bottom picture is a pretty damn good example of shatter comb!! :]

p.s. strain is unknown :]

Looking good man especially for a minute wash.. care to expand on that? What were your thoughts about the hot wash? And how do you feel the iso washes differed from the etoh...I know this is all subjective, just like to hear more..I've never done a hot wash either..extraction rates impurities etc

what do you mean hot wash?

i did everything out of the freezer.

froze jars of weed, and bottles of alcohols.
measured out my liquid, submerged my material in the jars, lightly shook, placed into freezer, and within seconds, took out, and strained through one coffee filter into my pryrex bowl.

i applied heat and vacuum to the small iso wash to speed up the boil off (after the freezer rinse)

as for comparison of the two, i did notice the everclear evaporate off a tad quicker (75-85F temps with fans on both)

and as for purging, the everclear batch just seemed further along. when using a vacuum, you see many bubbles rise up, andmake a muffin, the everclear batch had a very very nice tiny bubble muffin structure, while the 99iso reminded me of a butane muffin, big bubbles..

i think all i have left is water moisture in all three. thats why the consistencies are different..

and to countvp, i am using 190 proof everclear.

and i used 1 cup of everclear to 14 grams of scissored up premature tiny buds.. ( same with iso)

you think my middle shatter oil is gross vacpurgeQ!E thats 99iso . and if i played with it more, it could be prettier..

im going to do a 2nd rinse on all the material soon here, just iso, see what we can make..

huh??

I assume you mean ISO. in which case is always assume 99%.. who uses 70% for oil.. gross. even 99% is gross lol!
He used both ISO and Everclear. One wash was ISO (heated), other was ISO (natural purge) and last was Everclear 190 proof. Ya never use 70% if you must at least 91%.

Looks beautiful Guz, did you happen to take weight of them after all is said and done?
