I'm using jacks currently and have been for some time. What value comes from checking the TDS of the runoff? If you're planning to use it for a crop you'll be earning money with, it only makes sense to get a TDS meter so you can measure your nutrient strength and a pH meter so you can manage your acidity levels.
GET GOOD ONES, CHEAP INSTRUMENTS ARE A FOOL'S ECONOMY!
That's free advice, worth hundreds of times what you paid for it.
EDIT; a TDS meter will still help you in soil, so you can measure and control the nutrient strength going in and measure the strength of the runoff coming out.
