Greetings fellow Aerogrowers.
I am a semi-experienced (female) grower, But my past grows were all organinc soil outdoors. I received the Aerogarden space saver 6 for christmas 08.
I immediately ordered the mastergrowers deluxe kit.
I placed the AG unit in a plastic cabinet, and made some holes for air flow.
I also added a small fan.
Note: Order the master growers kit first! It comes with a lot of sponges, baskets and nutes. The baskets that are supplied breakapart for easy replanting.
For my first grow experiment I used bagseed, which as far as I can tell is a hybrid sativa/indica.
Seeds were germed in paper towels until taproot sprouted.
Seeds were placed (taproot down) in the grow sponges under the salad greens setting. After a few days some of the taproots were pulling out, so I cut all the way through the sponge and replaced the seedling with taproot about 1/8 of an inch down into the sponge.
Note:You must make sure that the seed is far enough down in the sponge otherwise it will push out.
Note: As per the guides and reading all the previous posts, I also bought a small 3" airstone at petsmart and the figure 8 cord to attach to lights.
3 Seedlings were given 24 hrs of light.
Nutes were added as per the AG directions.
After 4 weeks, I noticed the largest of 3 plants looked like it had female organs. I was right. The other 2 still were not showing. Usually the males will show first and be bigger and more robust. Not so this time. Probably due to bad genetics.
Anyway after 6 weeks I switched to 12/12. After a week still no indicators on the other 2 but they both looked like males to me due to the space between nodes and less side branching. I decided to cut 1, I cut it out at the roots and left the roots in the AG because it's too hard to detangle them.
Also at this point I took 3 clones from my female. Clones were placed in water on a windowsill.
Then I found out I had to go away for 10 days!!!!!!!! I was faced with a big dilema. I had no one that I could trust to look after the babies.
So I placed the clones in the AG filled it up to the top with water and split.
After 7 days I got a friend to fill the resv. and he said everything looked fine.
I got home 3 days later to an almost empty resv. and my female was drooping, the other one was indeed a male and the clones were barely alive.
I immediately took the clones out, they had rooted! I replanted them in soil and started them on 24hrs under a compact floro. 2 survived and are thriving today.
My female recovered and has the whole AG to herself, right now she is in her 4th week of flowering.
I detached the light and suspended it above the unit. She is about 24 inches tall. I also added another 24 watt Compact floro.
I am not expecting a big yield from her.
It was my intention from the beginning to get a female to make clones for a summer crop.
I have my 2 clones still under 24 hrs light and when the get big enough I am going to take clones from them and start them in the AG, then replant outside in the spring.
So looking back, my first experiment was a success. (so far)
In the future, I don't think I would use the AG for flowering, I think it is best used for clones......Unless you use lowryder or lowryder crosses.
