Jillybean Grow Report

I'll just get right to it: what a waste of my time, I'll never grow this strain again. in a phrase: Popcorn jungle.

I'm especially disappointed because it looked so good in the beginning and middle phases, so I expected great things out of this strain, but towards the end I started to worry and now that the harvest is in I see that I was right to be concerned.

I've grown several TGA strains and hold their gear in high regard but Jillybean is not one of their winners in my opinion. What I could find online made me expect a high yielding plant and a quick finisher. It did finish quickly (seven weeks) but yielded just under 1oz per plant in a set up that should have gotten me at least twice that.

The buds are extremely resinous, smell great (creamy citrus), and the main colas are a respectable size and density, but that doesn't make up for the loose popcorn everywhere else. The smoke is good but there just ain't enough of it.

Grow details:
4 week veg
7 week bloom (trichs: 5% amber, 10% clear, 85% milky)
Soiless, 1.5 gallon containers
19 plants under 3 600w HPS lights
Starting height was 12-14", Finishing height 28-32"
Cut out branches on bottom 6"
Temps: 80-83 max day cycle, 63-68 min night.
Lots of maroon color on fan leaves but little on the buds themselves
Extremely floppy and needed extensive staking and support
Jack's Classic used through out, two applications of Kool Bloom in final week
Only other additive was silica
Five day flush
As a test three plants were topped but this did not improve yield
Did a moderate amount of defoliation in final 3 weeks in hopes of improving lower buds

Pilgrim....Depends on the strain. Could be monster colas (Platinum OG Kush, Kryptonite) or small super dense nugs (GDP, Purple Kush).

I like 600s because they have the most efficient watt/lumen output. And because it's a cooler light you can get it closer to the plants and get more usable light out of them. Hence 3 600s instead of 2 1000s. And the three lights give a better light distribution than two. Oh, and I'm running 200w less :)

Brosnan....14oz with 400w? That's 1 gram/watt. I don't know what you're doing but it sounds a little too good to be true. How long did you flower them?

None of mine hermed.

humm i dont know if u miscalculated... for 2 ounce harvest per plant i usually veg for 6 weeks and my plants finish at almost 4ft tall. when there 2ft and some i usually get just under an oz... so I think ur expectations were just too high... the strain is not the problem, it's u being unrealistic. i've never seen a 2 ft plant yield 2 oz ? if thats possible let me know what strain im very interested! But I was tought veg until they are 1ft high to get 1oz off each plant or veg until they are 18 to 24 inch high to get 1.5 oz to 2 oz.

Most growers who have their grows dialed in grow 1 gram/watt.

Everytime i grow its ruffly the same output. I could get more too if i added Co2 and more wattage with the same amount of plants. But i keep things simple. real simple. soiless mix. organic nutes fed every 3 days. 1 grow ..2 flower and cal mag ..botanicare stuff.
i flowered for 8 weeks which is what it supposed to take to flower fully. when i thought they were done at 7...i gave em 1 more week and that week gave me some much needed weight. they really blew up that last week.
the taste and high was amazing.

but they were really flimsy plants....every cola needed to be supported. but that might of been because the buds were huge. i really like jilly bean. i think Subcool really made this strain resemble female traits: finicky...sensitive...vulnerable but good looking, smell good and taste good. lol

Well I'm impressed if you consistently get that kind of yield, especially without CO2. I always thought most growers considered 2 lbs per 1000w the holy grail and upper most limit, but wouldn't 1g/watt mean 2.2 lbs for a 1000w light?

Maybe I'm missing something.

I'm glad I didn't go for this one now, the low THC of 11% put me off originally. I'm a high tolerence smoker so need a more potent strain.
Thanx for the info' mate.

The benchmark is actually .5 grams a watt every 30 days of flower with many growers exceeding this amount. Most of them just don't spend time on message boards anymore.

jilly bean is legit..grew it for 5 or 6 yrs...maybe ur not giving it wat it likes..u read up on it on their site. i got nearly a gram of mingbending ganja from a watt...particularly the b.h.i made from her...tastes like jelly beans.. i swear i got a zip of clean ass bubble.

I ran several jilly beans, and some f2s. Each and every one was a huge yielder. I'd consider it if I had commercial aspirations. Great taste and look, 60 day finish, and B+ potency.

@ OP: You have pics of yours?

I really think that TGA has gone downhill that much! Heroesofthefarm=not in subcools own house anymore. I think it was 2yrs ago. I am sure that there are clones or someone has ran it a few years back, but the quality sounded spot on to what I got 2yrs ago. It just would not firm up and I ran it 3x before I stopped cloning it.
People can expand thier busines and thrive. I think that it hurt the quality of TGA.

Zombie thread alert! LOL

My Jillybean needs a lil pruning to be her best, but the same can be said for most strains.

It's a clear favorite of the ladies here; they love the flavor and the buzz.

It runs out eight weeks for me, gets frosty, solid middle of the road yield.

Maybe I got a killer pheno, but mine is stone stable, juicy and popular; if I dropped her from the lineup, I'd be in serious trouble with my patients!

I think that I got 4 bad packs back in april'04 and I have been sour about it since. I might get clones of TGA, but I will not buy anymore packs.

I'd say that's a prudent move, considering my own experience. I got this Jilly as a clone. TGA has been inconsistent for me, too. I had to pitch Dairy Queen because it just wouldn't climb a trellis with a damn; kept insisting on choking itself out.

I know this cool cat that has a few dozen jillybean f2s, and has ran a couple w/ success. I could probably get you a few........ ::eyesmoke:
I have a pack of AoS going. It is my last pack of the 4 that I had. Maybe, I will get lucky and have 1 keeper out of 4 packs. I dont know why I have a compulsion to talk trash about TGA now? Almost like I cannot help it. I feel the same about CaliConn. Nobody realy talks about sweve like he is a god either.

Popcorn jungle sums up what i have to say about it. I grew it inside for a couple runs and there is a bit of small stuff that comes with the medium stuff. It smells great and gets a little color which is nice. The structure of the plant is not sog style at all. It branches out everywhere so thats why your small style grow didnt work. And ofcourse you had boatloads of popcorn. After two runs i thought i was going to weed it out of the mix but then i grew it outdoor. And oh ya, shes an outdoor plant. Shes perfect outside! Those popcorn buds all grew into nice sized buds outdoor. They dont grow one long cola so the mold isnt going to be a problem on them, and the yield is fanfrickintastic. Im going to keep them around till next year just to have them outside again.
Moral of the story...outdoor, not indoor. @subcool , would you agree with that?
