Sorry for noob question, but why is PVC bad? I've heard some things about some plastics breaking down, but I forget types and causes.
Thanks

I've seen people use PVC to make the frames for the SCROG screens before and they have had no problems.

It could be a specific type/form of PVC that is causing these problems. I would rather be safe than sorry so I'm going to stay clear of any kind of PVC in my rooms.

Wow I'm glad I read this. I was going to install some PVC pipe to mount some fans and stuff on. I'm going to stay away just to be safe.

Rigid pvc is not the problem
never has been. it is when you add chemicals to plastic to make it soft and flexible that you have a problem.

Its the process they were using to use the PVC to coat the walls of the tent that was making it susceptible to HID lights.

Anyone using PVC pipe fittings doesnt have to worry, you will be fine.

You could do yourself a favor, and just buy a Homebox, or if you like the mylar style by a Secret Jardin DR.

They are both reliable, everyone who uses tents ends up with one of these 2 brands. I am currently using a homebox myself.

You will find Countless reviews on Homebox or SecretJardin, so you shouldnt have a problem making a decision. Either way, they are the Best, Safest tents on the market for a good price.

The one major flaw with the HH Silver edition IMO is the door. Its a real bitch having all that fabric in the middle and the bottom. Sometimes your kneeling with you feet outside and your knees inside the tent, you couldnt do this with this tent. IMO I would find it ending up being a hassle when moving plants as well. Bigger doors are better, thats why I like the homebox.

The issue was with a chemical that makes plastics "plastic" i.e. flexible and moldable. It is typically done with a chemical many people have recently become familar with.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phthalate

Remember baby chew toy toxic problems? Apparently, the levels necessary to interfere with plant development occur at extremely low levels. Low enough that the materials would pass safety in other uses like food products. Not good for the growing of plants. So the major problem with the tents weren't so much the support poles but the very flexible PVC plastic inner lining. It is loaded with phthalates to give it that flexibility and has a very large surface area exposed to high intensity radiation. The phthalates essentially boil out and are then breathed in by the plants' stomas.

So, if the plastic you are considering using is highly flexible, don't use it. Look for more rigid plastics, ones that tend to crack instead of flex when under stress.

Hope that helps.

My Dark Room has pinholes and most of the seams and zippers have light shining through in a few places. The skin is so thin it rips easily. I
think next time I'll invest in either a HydroHut Silver or a Homebox. The Secret Jardin is ok for now, but the quality is only so-so. I would
much prefer canvas exterior to mylar.
