just did the switch from 24/0 under MH to a 12/12 HPS both 1000w, three days ago. I have noticed some distinguishing characteristics I wanted to run by you guys. First, I watered these three 2 days prior (Schedule was 1 gal apiece every four days, once went five days), when I switched to HPS first thing I noticed heat was a lot more intense. the MH is burning 24/0 still with new ones in basement. The ones I'm flowering are upstairs in spare room so I attribute some of the heat to the switch but I was wondering if maybe this kind burned hotter. Next thing I noticed, the first full day, was two were droopy. I read some posts and even though it was only the second full day since watering I brought them outside, in shade, and watered the two in question. after allowing 1/2 hour to drain I threw them back in under light (I know, should have waited till night to do the watering but they were scaring me). Almost immediately I noticed a positive change. I thought my problems were done there. Today when I came home, one of the ones I just watered was droopy, again. I checked soil, about an inch and a half deep, and it is pretty dry (a little moisture but boy, the difference is incredible, from every four days to every day?? or is one gallon apiece not gonna cut it any more?). Plus, the one that I didn't have to water is not only ready for a watering but almost all tips have a yellowish-white/green tint (about a ml in diameter). One of the ones I watered yesterday also is starting to form these tips. I have the humidity lowered from 75%, in basement (actually was higher just the meter wasnt able to get a more efficient reading, given parameters), to 40% and heat went from a steady 83* to almost 95. Added co2 bucket to help with heat. I also have 18 inch oscillating fan. Their also in five gallon containers in case anyone is wondering. I am attaching pics that would hypothetically coincide with what conditions I am referring to.

I think you are right about the hps being hotter. My hps tubes are hotter than my mh tube. They are all in a line of three. Mh in the middle. Anyways never put much thought in it. May be the extra lumens, Donno.

It sounds like the room is drying out faster. The temps are high but I wouldnt think they would droop from it. Could be shock from the move. You have to think about temps, humidity, airflow... everything involving its atmosphere. Its a learning experience.

The 1 gal pots will prolly get root bound depending on the size of the plant. I would suggest looking at your roots atleast once a month.

The heat needs to be fixed. thats prolly what you are seeing with the tips. The edges will kinda point up. Your nodes will stretch and your bud will be loose. It may be better to bud inyour basement where the temps are cooler. Or get some a/c and ventilation. WM

Ok here's my story I think it will help-I was running 2 1000 mh in veg room ballast blew both out- had to grab to spare 1000 Hps and use thoughs in veg-in just 6 hrs I knew I was in serious troubles-my plants where way too hot -the heat of a Hps is like twice as hot. I ran out and grabed 3 T-5 4foot 4 blue bulbs- wow everything went cool in there fast, and the heat was of the canopy of leaves.
So then I went to check my Flower room I have 4 1000 HPS out there, I took a closer look and noticed they where stressing. I moved all lights up 26inches above canopy. Major diff in just 24 hrs. Also I water almost everyday under Hps and used to Mh, now with T-5s in veg every other day perhaps. I use a moisture meter and plunge 1/2 - 3/4 down if its dry at roots I want to know.

thanks I'll get an a.c. put in. I can't put them downstairs, there is a different cycle going on and no capacity to section off without some amount of light seeping in. I have a co2 bucket (which I thought would allow me to get away with temps of 90), how long do you think I can get away with this before I start affecting the quality? I'll need a few days before I can get the a.c. because I am tapped out after buying this second setup to flower.

wow, I hope to be where you're at one day. I did some searching for the 4ft. T5's and it's abit pricy for me right now, I don't know if there are bargains somewhere you might know about. From what I saw its about the price of another setup, between ballasts and bulbs, reflectors, yadda. so under the HPS you have had to increase your watering? I havent got a moisture meter and was told a way I can check to see if the base is dried like the top couple of inches, is with a simple butter knife into the base, then pull it out and feel if its cold or not. You sound like a person who's got an inkling into this sort of thing, do you see that as a valid suggestion? Like I said to the other guy, im tapped after buying a second setup, so getting new gadgets like a moisture indicator isn't something I can rush out and get today. However my problem is an immediate one, as you no doubt understand. so if I can get some basic information on my plants with household items it would be of tremendous help. I just dont want to keep watering every day or two if the base isn't drying out like the rest. I heard thats when you invite disease.

Yeah stay away from root rot, but if there droopy water them, and if they pick up then you know you where right. As for the knife trick ?? I would put my finger in soil up to knuckle and it would feel cool and moist then I use my meter $10.00 and it was dry in middle of container. So with out a meter go with what the plants are sayin.
I water with nutes every day in Flower room, in veg room I use just water once a week, rest of the time I use pro grow veg, and add as needed,Extreme Serene ,Amino Aid,etc.
