Kali Mist Old school weed at it's finest

As a younger man, before marriage, before having a child, before mortgages and responsibilities, I truly enjoyed smoking weed. At that time in my life, I was a regular daily smoker. Beginning in the late 80's the weed available in my area of the country (USA) took on a new type of buzz. It was still very good weed, mind you, but with the buzz came a lot of anxiety and mental lock up. I didn't care for this type of buzz. Gone was the happy, social, laughing at the drop of a hat type of buzz that I had come to enjoy so much. At first I thought the problem was with me and just the frame of mind I had, but as time past by, I noticed people that I smoked with on a regular basis started to be less and less interested in getting high. Eventually, I came to understand that it wasn’t just me who had this type of reaction to the available weed. Now, to be fair, not everyone that I smoked with had this opinion. As a matter of fact, probably less than half of us felt this way, but it was enough of us that it was undeniable the pot was to blame here. I couldn’t say if it was the strain or the growing technique or some other cause, but I can say that I didn’t enjoy it anymore. So, long story short, I gradually became a non smoker. Years have gone by, my child is now grown and off to college. The house is almost paid for and responsibilities have become a normal part of everyday life, instead of an invisible shackle and chain. Consequently, my thoughts began to drift back to the “good ol’ days” of my younger self. I reminisced about the fun I had with my friends as we enjoyed a joint or two and spent the next couple of hours laughing, cracking jokes and just enjoying the world around us. Well, one thing leads to another and I found myself studying marijuana cultivation. Now, just so you understand a little bit about me, I’m no gardener by anyone’s measure, but the idea of growing my own stash coupled together with the nostalgia of days long past, planted a seed, if you’ll pardon the pun, in my head that began to flourish. To be honest with you, I didn’t even intend to smoke the fruit of my labor. I have several friends who appreciate weed and they all appreciate it even more when it’s free, if you know what I mean. I studied and studied. I weighed the pros and cons of the hobby. I discussed the idea with my wife who, by the way, wasn’t exactly thrilled at first by the idea and then made the decision to give it a whirl. Ordering seeds was the first hurdle I needed to overcome. If you are at this stage in the process, I know exactly what you are feeling right about now. Anxiety is part of placing an order for something of this sort and let me just say right here…… if you are ordering contraband to be shipped to you from outside the country and you aren’t at least a little nervous, there’s something wrong with you, pal. It’s true that the order might get picked off by customs and if it does you’ll most likely only get the dreaded “green greeting” from US customs. It’s also true that it probably won’t go any farther than that unless you want to argue with them. That being said, there is nothing stopping them from letting your package pass and alerting your local authorities. It’s a calculated risk that is mostly in your favor, but by no means a slam dunk. Weigh your thoughts carefully. So I gathered up my guts and placed my first seed order. It took about 10 days to show up and let me tell you, I eyeballed every car that slowed down by my driveway for each and every one of those 10 days and then some. After a few days I started to relax and look forward to starting my seeds. Unfortunately, my strain research was not as fruitful as I had hoped it would be. The strain was good, but just not exactly what I had hoped for. I repeated this process several times to no avail, but one day while lurking around the forums, I came across a smoke report on Kali Mist. It was well written and I was immediately intrigued. I spent the next few weeks absorbing and digesting everything I could find about Kali Mist. A few of the reviews were less than stellar, but 95% or more were two thumbs up all the way. Armed with my research, I plunked down my money and waited. A week later, my magic beans showed up and it was game on. Allow me to digress for a moment here and give a shout out to Simon and the crew at Serious Seeds. These folks have proven that quality trumps quantity and their reputation is proof of that fact. I don’t think you could go wrong with any strain from this company if customer feedback means anything. The grow itself was normal and uneventful. Kali Mist is easy enough for a first time grower, in my opinion. The plant clones easily and I do suggest that you make provisions to clone all the females you get. I can virtually guarantee that once you try it you’ll be glad you did. I saw only two obvious phenos in my batch of seeds. One was a more squat indica growing plant and the other was a taller sativa style plant. The leaves appeared the same between both versions. Height was the only real visual difference between the two. The plant that I chose to keep identified herself by smell. I grew out all the females I was lucky enough to get. Some were indica and some were sativa in appearance. All of them produced very good smoke, but Smelly Shelly stuck her head up above the crowd. She is, in my opinion……. Superb. Before I move on, I want to clarify what I mean by smell as best that I can. All the plants smelled of growing green life, but Shelly had a beautiful sweet and spicy scent to her that would pass throughout the house without odor control. This smell began a few weeks after starting from seed, continued through veg, but curiously did not seem to get much worse during flower. If you’re lucky enough to get a copy of Shelly yourself, you’ll know her when you smell her. That being said, lets move on to the buzz. If you do your homework, you will see many reports and also random comments describing the taste of the plant and the bouquet of the high. I would whole heartedly agree with the general descriptions given here on RIU and other forums as well. For me, the buzz starts out smoothly and takes about 15 or 20 minuets to gather a good head of steam. My thoughts start to stream in and things that are normally rather mundane or possibly even abstract start to take on a more in-depth meaning to me. This pot seems to somehow open up my mind to greater understanding of the world around me. Sort of like what I imagine slow, steady enlightenment must be like for anyone who’s religion leans that way. I know, I know, before you say it, Sounds like hippy bullshit doesn’t it? Trust me, I’m not, but I swear to you my words are true. Furthermore, many of these “new understandings” remain after the high is over. By my measure, if that idea can stand up to the light of day in a sober mind, then it’s a true change of understanding, don’t you think? To give you an idea of where I’m coming from with this description, let me explain. My main enjoyment in smoking kali Mist is later on a weekend evening, after my wife has gone to bed and the sun is well down. I slip out to my workshop, pack a bowl up and get to know my mind. Let me crank the wheel of this conversation off even further, for sake of explanation, and say, if you happen to be lucky enough to live somewhere that you can truly see the stars at night, take yourself outside on a clear, moonless night, spark up, clear your mind and just allow yourself to truly see the grandeur that is the universe. If you’re not stunned by the sheer magnificence of life on this planet and the literal possibility of there being billions of civilizations out there, any of which could be, at that very moment, looking right back at you, wondering if you’re out there too? Well then, I’ll bet not too much impresses you, Charlie. On the other hand, if by chance you do see the picture I’m trying to paint here, then friend, THAT is what Kali Mist can do for you. Another of the finer qualities of Kali Mist is that it will produce small visual and audio hallucinations. Don’t get turned off by this. I’m not talking about the holy shit, what the F was that? kind of trip. For me, they are pleasant little additions to the high. Nothing outrageous. As a matter of fact, if you are in the company of others and the conversation is good, you probably won’t even notice these things. They are that subtle. The reports you will see that speak of the “up” of the buzz are accurate, in my opinion. I do not feel like sitting down for the first hour or so after getting started. I wouldn’t describe it as being like a caffeine buzz, though. I would describe it more like the energy you have when you are having the best of days and your endorphins are happily coursing through your brain. I guarantee you it beats the hell out of couch lock. I’m sorry to say that one thing Kali Mist isn’t, is a medical strain, at least as far as pain reduction goes. I have spinal pain and Kali does not seem to help this out in the least. For me this is not a problem as I use marijuana strictly in a recreational fashion. My job title requires me to be available and clear headed most of the time and that is fine with me. I do not have the desire to be high every day that I once did. Rather, I’m what most smokers would call the most recreational of users. Once every week or two is fine for me and as far as pain goes, it’s not unbearable so I can deal with it. The buzz Shelly provides me is 2 to 3 hours in length and probably longer if I would stay up longer, but by this time it is getting late and I’m not as much of a night owl as I once was. The quantity of weed required to satisfy me is 2 tokes from my bowl if I really want to get it on and just one will do for me if for some reason I need to keep my shit together. Allow me to add this too, Kali Mist is the kindest of weed, but she can also be a bully if you don’t know when to say when. She is the kind of pot that will, if you respect her, sweetly massage your brain or, take her for granted and she will definitely push you down and take your lunch money from you. All things considered, Kali Mist turned out to be, for me, that weed of yesteryear, the lost holy grail recovered……Hell, I might even go as far as to say, she helped me to get back a piece of my youth long past. Thank-you Simon, and thanks to all the fine folks at Serious Seeds for the fine work you do. Keep doing what you do.

Fucking Awesome post! Love it! Isn't it crazy to think back at all the herb that you once enjoyed and how so much has changed since then. I remember growing with Alaskan nutrients, and a stolen hps street lamp fifteen years ago. Its amazing how the technology, the genetics, and the industry as a whole has evolved into what it is today! I am proud to say I am a marijuana cultivator!

Paragraphs are your friend dude,, chop that bitch up so we can read it..
You're right on that. Actually, all paragraphs were in their proper place when I wrote this piece on another program. I copy/pasted here and I guess that something in the conversion didn't work out. I didn't re-read it after the paste and just posted it. Seriously though, if you need the paragraphs to be able to read and understand this story, it's going to be over your head anyhow.

Dude I wanted to read it, but it was just a huge wall of text,, I was not trying to burn you.. I figured you could fix it fast.. but whatever.. Did not mean to hurt your writing skills.. But I bet you remember this phrase(paragraphs are friend) every time you write a story for now on.. even if you hate it.

cant believe i actually read through that, i usually dnt read a post that long even if it has pics but i went through with it. the high u described, deep in-depth thought, is quite possibly my favorite thing about smoking, im a regular smoker so these in depth thoughts are not too spectacular for me anymore, they were its just this thought process is not different for me, years of daily smoking im always in a cloud of thought, walking around evaluating the world and its processes, and i feel i have a better understanding of the world around me than others, especially ones my age. still love the thought process that smoking gives me,its just nothing new to me now, unless i get going on a new thought, thats always fun,

sounds like exactly what im after. i am in the exact same boat. only smoke once every now and then and really enjoy that sativa buzz. real clear headed euphoric smoke.

if you re into trying new things may i suggest some of barneys farm laughing buddha. i doubt you will be dissapointed with that one. i describe the high as purely motivational. as soon as i smoke a joint i get the urge to play music and bop around the house doing odd jobs. always a smile on your face and your mind is always wandering to places of creativity and productivity. im forever making little improvements everywhere i go when smoking the buddha.

great social smoke. very chatty thought provoking and will have you in such a good mood that you will have a positive effect on anyone around you i promise.

colas grow into huge spiraling arm length rods with resin so thick they look white. the smell is that of a tropical fruit punch, its so sweet and tasty, especially if left for a good cure, the smell in a jar of 3mth old buddha will have intensified so much you would be forgiven for thinking someone just opened a bag of candy nearby. carbon filters are a must with this strain though.

Awesome read  I've been in the process of trying to find my preferred high for a long time now too and although I'm still really enjoying weed, I havent come close to finding it. Have tried Kali mist also, after looking into it just like yourself, but that wasn't the one for me....probably the particular pheno.

Last grow was northern lights, which I'm currently smoking and it just doesn't have that nice, feel good stone....more like an instant "holly shit I'm stoned" feel. Trying some Green house seeds Arjans Haze #3 at the moment which is supposed to be more of a laidback sativa high, hope I fall in love with it like you have with the Kali!! :weed:

You've got my attention here! I have heard of Laughing Buddah, but I have not had the pleasure of an introduction. I've heard once or twice that Barney's has some germination problems. What was your experience? Were there a lot of phenos or did it seem fairly stable? What would a guy look for in a keeper mother? I have some extra space in the mothers locker room. I wonder if Shelly might be jealous if I had a girl on the side?

honestly i have heard all sorts of bad reports on barneys gear too. i have only ever grown 3 of there strains. i have grown laughing buddha, vanilla kush and morning glory.

i have had 100% success on germination. i have only grown the 1 laughing buddha so far and it was great. i grew 1 vanilla kush and it was really nice flavoured weed but the high was not as good as i would have hoped, that said i just flipped my second vanilla kush into flower last week so it cant have been that bad if im growing it again lol. i grew 4 morning glories and this was the strain that i was least pleased with. the high was very speedy and racy almost too much so, i just couldnt relax and the yield was quite low although that might have been grower error im going to grow the clones out and see if i can do better this time.

take from that what you will but i would say barneys are good breeders with some good genetics and i will buy from them again for sure.

i will be running laughing buddha again in 2 mths. i have only grown about 10 different strains from 7 or so different breeders and so far the laughing buddha is my favourite to smoke and grow.

also i think tangerine dream is the strain most people complain about. i have 5 of these seeds and i will be growing them out too as i honestly believe that they will be fine. if the high is as good as barneys say i dont care how long it flowers for or if the buds are a bit airy like most sativas, and that seems to be what most people complain about with that strain

First I would like to say. Awesome read and great thread. Thanks a bunch.

I too found myself in your shoes, looking for the holy grail. I too miss Thai Stick, Panama Red, Acapulco Gold, Columbian, and Maui.

I found some stuff from Holy Smokes. It is called Mulanjie gold. It is from that area in Africa.

It took 20 weeks in bloom and stretched 500% in flower but if you have the patients to let her finish, you will be rewarded with the buzz we love. Only it lasts all day. No burn out and will be your friendly conductor of the astroplane train. :')

I've been growing Arjan's Haze#3 for a few years now & it is very consistent without major phenotype diversity. It stays short & bushy for being mostly sativa & doesn't smell much at all while growing. Very respectable harvest. It has a GREAT high - thoughtful, warm, euphoric, mildly social. It's not terribly high in cannabinoids (THC=13%) but that isn't really very important if you have a "near normal" tolerance level. It's the best Greenhouse offering out there. Elder1, I hope you like it.

Also, I plan to start up a Kali Mist grow in a few months. How can one not - given the excellent & delicious monster post by droopy! I have grown Sagarmatha's Western Winds twice over the last two years. This strain is purported to be the exact same genetics as the original Kali Mist back in the 1990's. Simon at Serious Seeds says he has changed up the genetics on Kali Mist twice since the 90's. Tony at Sagarmatha has supposedly kept Western Winds genetics the same since the beginning. Western Winds is very sativa-like in it's structure & nute sensitivity but will be ready after 11-12 weeks of flowering. It has a very exotic "spicy" aroma & taste that I've never experienced before. The effects are spectacular ... very much as droopy's description of Kali Mist. The high is old time mid 1970's cannabis with that "all-in-the-head", universe-connected, spacey-thinking kind of effect. There is NO CEILING! The buds are a bit fluffy & the harvest isn't huge but man is it worth it!

Droopy, since you loved Kali Mist, you might consider giving Western Winds a try - if only for comparison sake. Cheers to all

Just an update to this thread, in case anyone is still reading. I was cleaning up in my workshop last night and I found a mason jar of Kali that I had placed in a spot that was out of the way and I had forgotten about. It is just under a year old now and I've got to tell you, If you can manage to squirrel away some Kali Mist for that long, you'll be greatly rewarded. I normally cure for two months and she's great to me, but this year old stuff is fabulous. For me, this stuff is most definitely one toke smoke now. I think I'll be updating my curing program from here out.
