Kandy Kush, Tangie, and Aurora closet grow. 600 watt HPS

This is my third indoor grow. I’m hoping it will be my first really successful one because I made a lot of mistakes on my first two. The first one I didn’t use enough light. The second one they got too overgrown and the LEDs weren’t powerful enough to make more than a few little colas and a shitload of larf.

That brings us to today. These ladies were in the grow tent in two gallon nursery bags. I just transplanted them into 7 gallon nursery bags and put them under the 600 watt HPS. I avoided using it all summer, but now that it’s cooled off and I’m not running my air conditioning I can use it. I’ve become pretty convinced that there really is no substitute for HPS, and that it’s the only way to get the big fat dense buds everyone loves

Here is what they look like right now. Since I have indicas, sativas, and hybrids in there I think the trellis is necessary. This time it should go smoothly. I welcome any and all feedback. I’ll post weekly updates. Today is officially day 1 of 12/12

I decided that since there’s room and the light in the closet is so good to throw one more plant in there.
Whether I have 5 plants or 6 the utility bill will be the same so I’m hoping this will up my GPW.

The white widow I threw in there is a killer pheno I found on the last go around. I was originally using her as a mother plant but I decided to just bud her. Now I’ve got a nice mix of indica, sativa, and hybrid in there and hopefully the trellis will keep everything at the same height.

I really feel like I should be pulling about a pound per 6 plant grow. I’ve gotta get a certain yield and a certain quality for this to be worth the effort.

I wanted to post an update a little over a week in. One of my tangies looks really interesting. It’s got these beautiful fan leaves and it’s really compact. It’s hardly stretching and there’s not much space between nodes. I’ve read that these more indica dominant tangies are extremely desirable because they get big frosty colas and finish fast. I saw one post of an indica dominant tangie finishing in just over 6 weeks. Anyway both tangies look great. So does this kandy kush that apparently just wasn’t getting everything she needed. I’ll post a pic of her soon as well.

Here’s a shot of the whole closet, and a closer shot of the kandy kush I’m getting so excited about. She seemed a little leggy in veg, and then started showing signs of nute deficiency. Once I upped her nutes and put her under the HPS she really took off. She’s the one in the rear right with the dark leaves. I think she’ll be the biggest yielder of this run.

The Kandy Kush I had was a stellar yielder, stretched like mad after flip, made massive colas, lemon, pine with a hint of diesel at the finish. Very strong sativa dominant buzz.

It’s a strain that I don’t think gets enough credit because it doesn’t consistently test above 20%. It’s a pretty popular strain in my state, and is some of the nicest flower I see in dispensaries here. I got two very different phenos — the one in the middle right is also kandy kush but that one is more indica dominant. It doesn’t like to branch as much and hasn’t gotten nearly as big. I’m interested to see what I end up with. I only planted two beans each of the tangie and kandy kush so this isn’t much of a pheno hunt, but everything looks good so far. I’m hoping that harvesting these 6 plants brings my first year of growing weed to a satisfying conclusion, and that I’ll be able to start next year with a closet full of my best clones.

I had another cut of Kandy Kush that I grew, it was nice but it didn't have the lemon and pine flavor. It yielded well but not insane like the cut I had before. I ran that cut for a few years.

I have 3 more feminized kandy kush seeds. I’m not going to pop any more of that or the tangie until I grow these out. I’m encouraged by the way they’re growing. I’ve had a couple of phenos from different strains that underperformed, but pretty much everything I’ve grown from seed so far has been solid. One white widow smelled like shit and one aurora didn’t develop very much resin, but most everything has been good.

I haven’t posted an update in a while and it’s time. I did some heavy defoliation and some slight lollipopping and I think everything is getting plenty of light. My goal for this batch is zero larf.

A few of the phenos are already starting to develop a nice amount of resin, specifically the sativa tangie pheno and both kush phenos. The HPS makes a huge difference.

Yesterday my friend gave me a pack of “pebble pusher” from GPS. Fruity pebbles OG x Stardawg. Should be a real badass strain. I’m popping 5 of the 11 tonight.

It hasn’t even been a week since my last post but today is day 25 and everything is really starting to take shape. That light makes all the difference, although I’m thinking about doing a little more defoliating. Now I’m starting to wish I had trained that tangie in the front left but those are looking to be some nice colas. The two kush phenos and the sativa tangie are still the frostiest. At this point I just want to get through all this other stuff so I can start focusing 100% on my greenpoint gear. These will be the last stuff I grow from inexpensive European seeds. From here on out it’s only Colorado’s finest.

Here we are at day 31. Some of this stuff is starting to look really good, like surprisingly good for nirvana.

I may hang onto that super frosty tangie. She smells amazing and even though I’m growing all this new stuff, it’s not gonna hurt to keep one clone of the very best plant out of all the nirvana stuff. By far the biggest yielder out of all 6. Loves the trellis and is making a ton of nice buds. The other plant in the pics is the OG dominant kush pheno. I lost the clone but I’m not sweating it. The trainwreck pheno looks good but has very little smell.

Day 47 here. No longer running HPS — I have completely switched to LED. This tangie is just getting super colorful and frosty. I think she has another two weeks, and I’m keeping her around for a little while because she has color, wonderful smell, and big yield. I think the more indica dominant ones in the middle are coming down next weekend. Everything is getting nice and dense, and I think there’s gonna be a decent swell over the next week. I’m adding a little bit more to my LED light, (two 60 watt bars with lm310bs and Cree xp-e deep reds) bringing it up to a total of 480 watts for the next batch in the closet. I don’t have a lot of square footage to work with, so I think I need to veg longer and encourage lots of 12” spears for the next run. I think the PAR will be maxed out over the whole trellis after adding these bars.

The better kandy kush pheno is the one that I unfortunately lost the clone. I think it was too cold and would have rooted if I waited longer but I wasn’t really looking for keepers when I popped those two beans. She’s super compact and big fat buds. The other pheno’s clone survived — the taller one. She’s super frosty and low odor. Not a great yielder compared to the others though. The more sativa dominant tangie is the biggest yielder in this crop. Also the frostiest and best smelling. I’m really excited to see how the next crop does after I add the bars. I think I’m only going to keep the good tangie pheno and the good white widow. I just sprouted a bunch of stuff from greenpoint so I’ve got a big pheno hunt in the near future and I’m guessing I’ll find at least one awesome pheno from each strain.

Well I just cut down a few nuggets off the indica dominant kandy kush. I mainlined and scrogged this one and she sure put out a ton of nice little branches. I was gonna wait until this weekend to chop that one and the aurora but she was looking nice and ripe. Swelled up good last week and all the pistils have turned and the trichomes are nice and cloudy. I think you can chop this pheno at 7 weeks. I’m kinda bummed I didn’t take another couple clones because this pheno is now history. The other pheno is frostier but the buds aren’t as fat.
