Started my 4th grow on 7/15/2018 with the strains below:
-Candy Kush Express from Royal Queen Seeds
-Special Kush #1 from Royal Queen Seeds
-Early Skunk from Seedsman
All three of these are fast flowering strains that should be done in 45-55 days. They were all freebie seeds that I got from a previous order, but it worked out that they were all fast flowering.
This will be my first grow journal. I finally feel like I have a decent understanding of what I’m doing and I’d like to see what other people think. My first and second grows were just way too time intensive so I try to keep things as easy as possible. I have always used a homemade super soil that I based off Sub Cool’s recipe and what I could get via Amazon. I kept creeping things up until I went insane and tried to grow all three plants in 100% super soil. I have no idea why I tried that, but it honestly didn’t turn out as bad as you’d think. One plant (C99) was fine with it, one had moderate issues (Lemon Kush), and the third was ravaged with nute burn (King Tut). I’m not sure the smoke will even be worth anything from the last plant.
Anyway, I went to go purchase a few amendments needed for my next batch of super soil and I ran across “Kind Soil.” They offer their own fully amended and cooked soil that seems to be targeted at small growers like myself (usually 3 plants) that just want it to be easy. I was going to need around $50 worth of stuff for my super soil and Kind Soil sells 25 lbs (good for three 7 gallon pots) for $89 and with shipping it came out to somewhere around $115. It saves me time and honestly the little bit of extra money isn’t that much of a concern for the peace of mind and added ease. So, I’m going to try it out. I plan for this grow to be very minimal. Kind Soil claims PH'd water only and that's what I'd like to do. I'll top and LST, but I don't plan on much else outside of that.
I popped the seeds in a moist paper towel inside of plastic bags, which only took about a day and a half for all three to pop. The water used for the paper towel was at PH 6.8. On 7/17/2018 I put in 1 lb of Kind Soil at the bottom of each 1 gallon fabric pot and then filled the rest with Roots Organic original. I PH’d my water to 6.8 using Earth Juice crystals as the Kind Soil website recommends using it over the liquid PH adjusters. I tried to research whether the General Hydroponics PH Up and PH Down would actually cause an issue with super soil, but the answers were just all over the place. I finally decided to get some Earth Juice and just go with what Kind Soil recommended. I got the soil pretty damp and let it sit in the sun to warm up a bit. Then I planted the seeds and put them in a dark closet that should stay between 70-75 degrees with humidity around 50%.
I’d like the humidity to be a bit higher, but it’s what I have to work with right now as my fully climate controlled environment is still being used from the 100% super soil grow. That grow has another 5-10 days left before harvest. So, I’m going to try something that may be a bit risky and start this grow outside on my back deck and then move them inside after around 21 days or so. Again, I’m working with what I got for space. I’m in MA so the weather is pretty nice during this time of year. It usually stays between 62-85 degrees, but on the hotter days I’ll move them into a shaded area and it's just for a few weeks.
The Kind Soil website recommends 1 lb for every gallon of grow space, although they don’t ever mention anything lower than a 2 gallon pot. I’m starting in 1 gallon pots and moving to 7 gallon when the time is right, which usually is around 30-40 days. They may end up growing a little faster this time though so we’ll see how that goes.
My grow setup is:
- Advanced Platinum Series P900 LED Grow Light
- 4x2 Gorilla Tent
- Seven Gallon Smart Pots (3x)
- Vortex S-Line Ultra Quiet 6” Inline Exhaust Fan
- Large carbon filter connected to inline fan
- Large dehumidifier
- Small humidifier
- Seedling heating mat
I can’t recall the brand names for some of the stuff, but if anyone is curious during the grow just ask and I’ll provide. I am 100% educated on this topic from the internet with only three full grows so I welcome any advice, comments, questions, criticism, etc. I’m curious to see how the Kind Soil works out. I have a pretty good baseline of how the rest of my setup works. I’ve grown nine different strains in it with just soil or my own super soil and I usually get around 6-8 ounces total from three plants with 30—45 days of veg.
Again, first grow journal so if I’m missing any information or you’d like to see something different just let me know. I’m also an amateur photographer so I hope to provide some good photos along the way! I included a few photos I did from my last grow here since the photos for this grow are so boring at this stage.
