Kitty Litter?

Perlites a pain in the ass go with the expanded clay pellets like hydroton if you can cuts back on mess and I recon plants like it more.

You can also cut down on mess if you presoak the perlite, a little trick given to me by the horticulturist at the Nursery. (Don't want to take credit for someone elses knowledge)

interesting thread!:hump:

I agree with you 100% on the thread & the perlite. I only wish I had used more than just 1/3 when I mixed these pots. Especially after having overwatering issues early on from bad advice that I took. But we live and learn, my next grow will be a 50/50 mix of FFOF & Perlite.

And I don't mean to change the subject or hijack this thread, but I'm just now building my "rooting" station. Can you recommend a "dip" to use? I think they're called root stimulators to help with faster rooting.

Dannygreeneyez my bad! I should have read a little deeper. MG does make perlite with added nutes. The bags i purchased were %100 natural perlite no additives. With that said, my bad. Now As for a dip. No clue. Fuzzybuds might have some insight. Good luck...

this is tru but hydroton and even rockwool cubes r expensive and hard to find in sum areas. perlite is fine. i dont think that FF would use it in there soil if it wasnt.
I can get big rockwool cubes for 75c and hydroton for 15$ a bag, thats shipped overseas and in a forigen currency.

No problem, I didn't get mad or anything. I just didn't want others getting the impression that I had a habbit of giving advice when I shouldn't. 99.9% of the time I wont open my mouth unless I'm absolutely sure. I should have assumed that they made more than 1 perlite, but the one with nutes is the only one that the Home Depot near me carries. That huge bag of Perlite for $18 I got from a nursery, and after shopping at the nursery I'll never buy anything from Home Depots garden department again. lol

Thanks for the good wishes, with my bad luck I need all the good luck I can get. lol Best of luck to you to. :bigjoint:

Likewise, i should have checked that myself. I got some paranoid weed that put me in a bad mood. Peace and weed grease.

Kitty litter is made for soaking up piss and shit and absorbing all moisture and turning it into a clump, even the clay kind is pretty much hard mud (clay as mentioned non sterilized) I could see how you may want to use styrofoam packing materlial like peanuts or something that isnt going to soak up anything at all. Just dont get how you would even think this would be similar. The hydroton would probably be better if you just want to assist drainage. The kitty litter would be the exact opposite of what you want. I would think the contents of a bean bag would be awsome. would be cool if there was a way to use the shitty litter clumps as fertilizer. YOu also dont want your cats to smell the litter in your seedlings and start burying turds in your grow medium. :)

Just wanted to post a message and correct a misunderstanding that I had. For rooting clones you don't want root stimulator. Rooting Hormones is what you want. The Rooting Stimulators I saw at the nursery just now had nutes and far less butyric acid which is the only active ingredient in the Rooting Hormone. The one that was recommended by the horticulturist is made by Green Light though I'm sure there are other good ones out there.

Anyway, I didn't want anyone using root stimulators for clippings on my account.

ur gunna want a rooting gel or powder, they sell em at gardening centers

Yeah, the rooting hormone that I bought is a powder. So I'll clip 5 nodes and put them in a cup of water immediately. I'll clip the 3 lower nodes in the water. Then I'll dip it quickly in the powder and get it in the hole that I made in the dirt with a pencil (to make sure the powder doesn't rub off).

I don't know if they go by any other name, but the 2 brands they carried both said Rooting Hormones. And for $5.99 I have enough to root 300 or more clones. It's well worth the cost.

you are wrong, perilte is essentially expanded asbestos. And is obsolete and extremely dangerous, even tree bark is better.

My mistake, I was thinking of vermiculite, but perlite is still shitty, sand and gravel and expanded clay are less dangerous and will all help with drainage.

My mistake, I was thinking of vermiculite,.
the vermiculite you buy bagged up in stores does NOT contain asbestos. Some vermiculite mines in the past contained asbestos , but have since been shut down. It is perfectly safe, but not what the OP needed anyway unless he's making some cakes,
