KNF and IMO "Indigenous Microorganisms"

So I'm transitioning from chemical fertilizers to organic which will be the method I use to grow everything from vegetables to flowers and of course cannabis. My first foray into making my own organic soil was not very successful so I went back to chemicals and coco with some plants in store bought soil. But the desire to become a self sustaining grower and cut the tether to products that have to be continuously replenished by purchasing them put me on a path of research. After months and many late night sessions in front of the computer I've decided to go with KNF and some JADAM techniques.

KNF is a fascinating method of growing and it all makes perfect sense. You use what's already available in nature. Seems like a pretty simple concept but I soon realized that there is quite a learning curve but I like to learn so it's been a fun and exciting endeavor so far.

The first thing I have started with is collecting IMO's. It's a rather simple process and fortunately I have a wooded area in the back of my yard complete with a small patch of bamboo. It seemed like a perfect spot to collect IMO's. Here's how it went.

First I built a small wooden box out of some scrap cedar I had laying around and filled it with brown rice.

I then covered it with a silk screen material to prevent bugs from getting in and followed that with some metal screen to keep the squirrels out.

When that was done I found a spot under the trees and next to the bamboo and pushed the rich forest debris away, placed the container of rice, and then covered it with the material in the area.

5 days later

From all the research I've done it appears that I have successfully collected IMO's. This isn't the end of the process as this will be mixed with brown sugar and allowed to sit for a week before it's ready for use inoculating other material that will be spread over my garden beds and added to piles of soil to be used for container cannabis plants.

Anyway, I don't post much in the Organics section but look forward to learning and sharing in the future.

So now that I've collected the IMO's it's time for step 2 where it's mixed with brown sugar and allowed to ferment for about a week.

It really is growing. Lots of microbial activity.

As I broke it down I could feel the heat being produced. It wasn't hot but much warmer than the ambient temperature around. Heat was being generated.

After mixing with organic brown sugar at a ratio of 1:1. I thought of using palm sugar but I'll experiment with that later. For now I'm just following the basics. But I don't see why palm sugar wouldn't work.

I have ceramic crocks but didn't want to use them for this so I used a large mason jar and covered the top with 4 layers of silk screen material.

I wrapped the jar with a black garbage bag to keep the light out.

That will set for a week and then I'll inoculate some organic material. Typically bran is used and I might purchase some as they sell it at a local organic supply shop down the road. But I'm also going to liquefy some and spray it directly on the soil before spreading compost. It can also be stored in the refrigerator. But I plan on making it all the time so I won't have any need to store it.

I'll be back with more updates and pictures on the process which I find fascinating. You really can't get anymore organic than this. I'm a convert. No more chemicals for me. Now to start making FPJ "Fermented Plant Juice" to use as fertilizer. I'm just disappointed I didn't start making the transition to organic self sustaining growing years ago. This is the way to do it if you have the land and it doesn't take much.

Here I am making FPJ with a roma tomato plant last year. This was a day before the frost was going to set in, so the tomato was completely done before I chopped it. This turned out to be some of the best fert that I have ever used!!!

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love it!

I just started a batch of FPJ myself. I grabbed everything in the yard. Old radish leaves, kale, dandelions, weeds, pepper plant leaves, etc... There has got to be some good inputs from those. I'm new to all of this but my experience this year with chemical vs aged compost in separate garden beds this year was night and day. The organic compost won by a large margin. No more tossing my plant material into the recycle bin. It's in a pile on the ground composing.

I remember years ago growing up and our family having gardens. My father always composted everything and mixed that back into the soil. Our gardens were always lush and productive without any added chemical fertilizers. He recently passed away but now I'm remembering some of the things he did and realizing that I myself have gotten down the wrong path because of my cannabis growing. Doing hydro for years I just got complacent and adjusted to chemical fertilizers.

I wouldn't use these organic methods for hydro but that is all in the past. It's an organic future for me. I'll still need to buy the occasional bale of peat just as a filler but that's about it.

Please share more regarding KNF and JADAM. I've likely read everything available online but anything related to actual experience is always welcome. I like to learn.

Here is a more recent batch of homemade Grokashi. I started using more inputs that was on the ingredient list like beet juice. I didn't realize at the time, but beet juice brings the streptomyces culture and it helps it get fuzzier.

Here it is on the top of a Sub Irrigated Planter in the style of GageGreenGenetics and Alan Adkisson(grokashi). I use JADAM liquid fertilizer in the rez along with LABS.

I showed you this pic before. I gathered the plant material between 2-3am because there are hormones that leave the plant leaves when the sun is out and they return at night. So, I harvested these plants at the darkest time of day. I added these to 55gal barrels and added leaf compost for a culture, added water and let it sit for a few months. 1yr is supposed to be better, but JLS is finished in a couple of months. They say it's like a fine wine, the longer you let it sit, the better. I have 6 barrels that I made of this stuff. This is "tall ragweed" and I used Lambsquarter separately in different barrels. From what I have read, you are not supposed to mix inputs. If you use one plant species, stay with it. If you have more than one species, separate them until time to use. Drake is another guy to listen to for KNF...

Cool stuff.

I didn't know about mixing different inputs. I've seen varying information. I have a couple dozen food grade buckets with lids so I'll make different batches from different plants.

One good thing is I have a niece working on her PhD. She's a Microbial Ecologist and is following my progress. She thinks it's great. We text a few times a week. She's been a wealth of information. Much smarter than me on the subject.

The more I learn the more I realize how much I have to learn. But in the end it's actually the simplest form of growing and I plan on mastering it.
