L Shaped Closet Q

I have an L shaped closet in a basement - roughly 6' x 2.6" x 8'tall and the other side is attached and roughly 4' x 2.2' x 8'tall. Looking to veg/clone on one side and flower in the other.

Probably looking to use fluorescents on the veg side and hps on the flower (are digital/electro ballasts still burning out hps bulbs at faster rates as covered in High Times March 2011 issue?).

My question is about ventilation.

Should I vent both rooms separately or use one charcoal'd vent fan in one room and just vent the other to it with a booster fan on the HPS? I will be installing timers and 'stats to keep things in general heat range needed. If I were to use only one fan where would best be the 'stat which signals the fan to turn on?

I'm looking to save money on the cost of fans and separate thermostats, etc but if it's better to have two fans then I've no problem cutting a second hole in my siding.

Any experienced growers care to sound off?

hmmm hard to imagen it all, but I would probably go with one big ventilation with a carbon filter on to clean the outtake air from both the "rooms" and run it 24/7

and a smaller sealed one with a cool tube/hood for the HPS that get on with the light, and as you, I would use fluorescent (T5HO) for Veg

btw
in a L shaped room I would make the flowering room in the back (and be very careful light proof it) and the Veg at the door so I had access to the Veg room all the time

This is the space. I've crudely marked where the HPS is, where it would vent to and where it exits the structure.
The wall between the two spaces will be light tight as will the doors which open toward one another making it impossible to
have light from either side affect the other - though I won't service both sides at once so it should be fine either way.

look good, but why not run both at the same time ? harvest twice as often

about the ventilation, if you only plan to run one for both room`s you some how have to make it possible for it to draw air from both rooms and you need some intake holes low down at both doors where it can drag in fresh air that can pass your plants

as a rule of thump (depend a lot on ventilation quality and type) you need 2-3x the size of passive intake holes as your outtake ventilation

etc
if you run a 6 inch ventilation witch I would advice as a minimum

you should have about 12-18 inch`s of passive intake to keep a slight negative/under pressure in there so you know all air going out is through the filter

and depending on the size of the HPS you plan to run (above 400W) I would suggest a cool tube or hood, but with that on you either need some ducthing work to make it run on the 6" of maybe get a small 4" to run separate on the HPS to keep it cool, if you seal that one up you can just vent it out your room tho on hot day`s it suck to reuse hot air, dunno what part of the world your from and how hot it gets there or in your house for that matter, but big HID lights do get hot need some work and testing, keep it under 80F when lights is on, 74-78F is better

Thanks for the advice.

Live in the Pacific NW and this is a basement. Air is ALWAYS cool in the basement and comfortable in summer. I have taken many steps to insulate this room and bring heat to it so that I can maintain an ambient temp in the 70's.

And yeah, both rooms will be in operation at all times. Veg will hold a couple mothers and clones. The flowering will harvest the max I can per law (yes I'd like to respect that for the sake of simplicity).

Hey, Slip. Did you cut that zipper door off of an existing tent? Make it yourself? Or did you pick it up somewhere?

well to be honest I "got" the rubber mat at work (have em on role`s, tick black rubber) and bought a heavy duty zipper or actually a dust door for workers that have a zipper in it and some clear plastic with masking tape on it for the door (used that as masking when I was painting the hallway) worked for 2 years soon, cleaned the rubber with alcohol before I glued the zipper on, then opened it to cut the hole with a brand new standly knife

Ah, ok. Cool! I'm getting tired of having to hang a tarp in front of the Veg box. Going to have to try and put together something similar. Thanks, bro.

EDIT: Sorry for the momentary thread-jack (Your setup looks great Solarves - You're going to want to spend as much time as you can on your ventilation. Go fucking nuts with it. It'll totally pay off)

p.s.

as I have a Veg room just out side and the zipper is`t 100% light proof I also have a rail with a black curtain in front of the zipper door

Awesome conversion of a closet there Slip!
@Pin ... not a problem. I had a similar question about the zipper too.

I'm looking at the Tjernlund 6" (530cfm) to service both small closets - which by my calcs ends up at just over 200cfm. Sounds like overkill and I may have to find a means to control the fan speed. Not sure yet how much pull loss there is from the filter, etc.

filter take up like 20-30% so might just be perfect ?

and better to have a bit "overkill" then too little, not like it will sug your plants out, but yea you can get a speed control to add, even seen some ventilations with it on from the start, some agin have two speed build in

as a rule of thump you need to exchanges your air every 1-5 minute, I would say every 1 minute if your have high temperatures and run some big HID lights, 3 can do in most cases and 5 is plenty if you only/mostly do it for fresh air and not so much to control/keep down heat (LED/small CFLs)

Ooh yea and about the zipper
