First off, I was wondering how San Fernando Valley Kush, or SFV, will do on a scrog? Some people call it a sativa dominant, but I have not grown it before now, so Im not 100% sure of the characteristics, once flower starts. I have been told that this cut is an indica dominat hybrid, but from vegging it seems to have more sativa veg tendancies than some of the other indica dom's I am working with, and certanly less bushy than my full indica, but i think it will do fine. The sativa part of the genetics should give it a nice stretch throughout the screen.
I built an approximately 4x6' screen. I noticed right away that the difference in plant height between the plants being used varied enough that I decided to give the screen a nice bend to help with that, and help with light coverage at the same time.
All plants are lollipopped, I just did the final pruning before flower, and I plan to flip them tonight.
@LBH You dont think I need to veg them out any taller do you? Other tutorials on here say to wait til a couple inches are though the screen before flipping, but not yours. I have extremely tight nodespacing, I think its probably just the right time, now that I got the screen to match the height of the rest of the shorter ones.
the 8 plants under the screen are currently in 7 gal pots, but I plant to transplant them all into 15 gal fabric pots in the next day or two.
do you you have any advice for this setup? do you think 15 gal's are too much, should I transplant into 10's instead? I have room for the 15's its just a bit more coco to buy, but if it will help, its no problem. I plan to put some hydro rings I have laying around on these plants so I can pump nutrient/water directly to them out of a bucket where I mix them up outside of tent, so getting to them should not be an issue either.
This is my first scrog, how do things look? do you have any tips or advice you can think of by looking at my picture? Any advice would be very much appreciated. I know this is kind of big for a first time thing, but I am confident it will be worth it.
My setup:
I have a 1kw DE with with gavita hood, and philips greenpower dedicated to this part of the tent. It is hanging perpendicular to the long bent side. There is also a 1kw full spectrum MH hanging in the middle of the 2 hps lights, right above the inside edge of the screen, which takes up approx 40% of the tent, so the scrog should get half of its sideways output. It is running without a reflector, as that would block the light from the HPS.
I will be adding some Exo-terra Repti-glo 10.0% UVB 200 26w CFL's make sure I have the entire spectrum covered, and to help with resin production of course. for $15 a piece, cant go wrong there, even though they will only last 2 cycles max, they should help the quality, along with the FS. If you look at the spectral chart on their website it has a nice looking full UVB spectrum plus 30% of its output is UVA as well which is another important part of the spectrum as well.
I have heard that with this combination of lighting, it is better to grow outdoor strains, because they are able to make use of the high quality light way more effectively than a strain bred to thrive under hps only which has very little of anything but yellow-red, and maybe 40 CRI. The sun is 100 CRI, so on a spectrum it would go relativelty flat, all the way at the top of the chart, across the spectral chart, so obviously we could never compete with that, but we can make it more like that, having a similar effect to a nice plasma setup without the cost. There are many good CMH and MH high CRI bulbs that cover the full spectrum that are great to supplement with. makes it just like sunlight, then add that to your HPS so you have all the growing power associated with that kind of light. The extra spectrum is for quality, not yeild neccesarily.
Anyone know how SFV grows outdoors? I assume they grow it in the san fernando valley, so I am hoping it will do well in this environment.
I have an opportunity to get a everything I need to start supplementing a little co2 every day, when my fans turn off for a little while at a time. about as long as it takes for the lights to heat up the room. Normally with this kind of setup I would have one tube mounted a few inches above each plant, to let the co2 blow down and fall through the foliage of that particular plant.
On a scrog this would obviously work different. I was thinking instead of pointing the tube straight down above a single plant, I would mount it horizontally on the edge of the screen, and have many tubes mounted this way all the way around the frame pointing inwards. I could do this like a foot or so above the screen so it gets out to the middle parts, and I could hang a couple in the middle vertically as well.
Anyone ever used the gravity method of feeding co2 on a scrog? this is different than having a sealed room that is constantly at 1500ppm. It is a much cheaper way to use co2 cause you dont need environment controllers, AC, etc, and you use a lot less co2, because your not constantly pumping the room full 24 hours a day, so the plants dont get oxygen toxicity from using up all the co2 in the room. the majority of the co2 the plants will grow with using the vented room method, comes from outside. This is just a little supplementation for a little extra boost without costing much. I already have a digital cycle timer, so I shouldnd't need anything besides a regulator and tank which will cost about $200. I think this would be worthwhile. What do ya'll think?
