My disagreement...
"They are dangerous"
No they are not. They are perfectly safe.

My agreement...
Plugging incorrect things into a power outlet is bad. Many people are stupid and/or uneducated on what is going on with what they use/do in many aspects of life. I don't call that dangerous on the controllers part at all...that's human error.

Why and how are a persons most important questions. If I don't know how to make or do it myself somehow(at least the general concept of what's happening), whether practical todo so or not, I don't feel comfortable doing or using it. And won't till I am. If there is no other option and I must use some help/paid to do...then I will be picking their brain till theyre sick of me and ask me to leave or shut up. But you would be surprised at how many professionals will talk their way threw things out loud, and you just need to absorb it. As well as research things yourself.

When we are talking about major growing, not hobby...a master gardener needs to be an electrician, engineer(many fields), carpenter, botanist, chemist, salesman, marketer, lab tech, personnel manager,...the list goes on. If wanting to be like them...like using equipment they do...then get educated. That's where I stand.
Simply keeping all outlets a nema6-15 would eliminate the the problem of people plugging 110v equipment into 220v power.

I completely understand where your coming from. It's the person not knowing any betters fault, but manufacturs should realize not everyone has that knowledge and to keep it simple. Just my opinion.

And it can be ordered with nema6-15's. And if that is what one want, they should get that one.
Or it can be in universal(US universal...x plugs) and allow much more flexibility. And there is nothing wrong or unsafe about it.
Read the first thing on the instructions...

Even the 4 light controllers are commercial products by ul and etl standards. But in their sheets for their claimed commercial versions....have a liability statement at the bottom
https://hydrofarm.com/downloads/fc/APCLC8DX_12DX_instr_15148.pdf

There is no short comings by the manufacturer. They have given the option to not deal with it, clearly stated what is going on and it's dangers, shown how to correctly, recommended using a knowledgeable professional, stated liability...they have done their part. It's up to the user to use it correctly. Otherwise that person shouldn't be using a setup that size requiring work like such. As simple as it is...if they can't figure that out they are in over their heads and THEY are the ones putting others and themselves in danger.
Consumers have responsibilities too.

My issue here stands for just about every piece of equipment that goes into a grow.

@Greengenes707 you forgot one; 'HVAC tech', lol
Oh ya totally missed that one...major qualification.

sometimes the diverse needed skills drives me nuts, just want to get back to growing instead of doing metal work, TLC testing, or carpentry.
but in the long run enjoy all the diverse skills I am mastering.

I'll be happy to take the burden of quality testing off your hands there, if you're feeling at all overworked... :bigjoint:

Welllllll... y'all ready for a nasty shock?

My '860W' CDM and magnetic ballast is currently pulling every last one of ELEVEN HUNDRED FUCKING WATTS?!?!

What the FUCK, over?!

I'll check it again after it's been running for an hour.

that's about right bro, a magnetic ballast is usually a 20% added electrical cost, that's why the digitals are better in that regard.
I think a digital is like 10% increase.
I only remember because it's roughly the same as a engine hp loss from a fwd or rwd.
Front wheel drives lose about 5-10% hps to the wheels, and a rwd loses about 10-20%
Useless facts I suppose...

Yeah that's not right if it stays at that draw, how old is the bulb? cheap mag ballast?

They're supposed to run on a magnetic ballast. Bulb not too old. That's outrageous...

It settled right in at 1100W. I'm pissed...
Yeah I know it needs a mag ballast. Some cheap ones will have a higher amp load than quality units......haveyou checked the draw with a 1000w hid bulb? When was the last time you changed out the capacitor?..is the mogul thread clean and pin getting good contact?

Caps recently checked, it was okay, everything seems tight.

I wonder if we're just getting a bullshit story from Philips.

Nah, all-start's meant for retrofitting and energy savings? Lol..........everything these large companies like royal Philips produce go through the legal department......I'm thinking it's the ballast or in rare occasion the bulb.

I have plenty of both, so it's going to be averaging time...

But what if the average is actually 1100W?
