LED are now a thing in case you haven't heard, I am a outdoor grower myself but have a mate who's switched to optic cob range and loves them, they have not only caught up but the new commercial lights are phenomenal not only in price but performance as well. It's a new world man, get used to it.

Is the marijuana equal to HID lighting in terms of quality?

Are you talking aroma, flavour, thc content? I know they test out just as high, I think a lot of purists are just that purists and like most folk resistant to change.
The truth of the matter is with LED you can get the same or better intensity 10 years no 2 or 3 years ago you could say without a doubt HID was the superior technology but today not so much and if you are willing to spend in the 750.00 to 1000.00 range you are going to get some really really good panels or COBS I understand the resistance but once the commercial market starts replacing HID with LED then it's time to start paying attention because that means they have come of age and can no longer be ignored or dismissed as inferior.

If you do DIY the 4' light strips I have found are less than $15 each, I haven't looked into shipping yet. It will cost more for the aluminum channel than the light strips. The drivers for them on the other hand can be a little expensive depending on the output.
