LED help please! lol

To be fair, acting like COBs are magic and less than 90w outperforms a 400-600 HPS is, well, bullshit.
Actually, it's not. COBs were invented to replace HPS in highbay factory and warehouse settings, with the added benefit of having a better alignment of photons within the PAR range. HPS has more coverage, but PPFD-wise, one of my COBs puts out about 850 PPFD at 14-16". More at 10-12 inches. If you look up the PPFD for Super HPS, you'll find that's about the PPFD of a 400-600w. I only need one COB per plant unless I set up a full array for a larger room.

The reason why ppf should be used to compare lights. Not ppfd.

You can adjust the parameters until you get any data values you want.

Also by your claims, should I expect a 400 and 600 watt hps to perform roughly equally?

Gap-pad looks great, how do I use it? lol
Hey man not sure if you've already gone the pad route but proper thermal paste is superior however you need only use close to a rice grain sized dab. Grab some arctic 5 or noctua nt-h1 and view a few youtube tutorials on pasting a CPU or GPU. Graphite pads do not transfer heat nearly as well as the 99% silver found in a quality paste. Or stop hemorrhaging money on this exercise and get pre-seated engines from cobkits or a full modular DIY kit from timber.

PPF may be what's put out, but PPFD is what the plant actually receives over it. So I would argue PPFD is the more important measure. If the density is comparative, then the lights are comparative. HPS and MH lack the PAR watt efficiency that COBs have. I would only use HID to cover a bigger room rather than a 2.5x4 closet.

you know what can make hps so much cheaper than LED`s ?

If you need a new bulb, order one, put your old one in the new lamps box and kick it, complain to the shop it arrived broken and ask them to send a new bulb again

free refills on bulbs, is a perk you can`t get with leds, then again leds can`t be sharp glass that cuts your hand, so there is that

I`d say these cobs running @ 40 to 60w that are cool and efficient in reality are probably not much better than a 1000w hps lamp running @600+super in a cool tube

but they do use less glass and are much easier to aim and build yourself, not that I`ve even built a hid driver but that`s kinda the point with hps the driver is about all you can DIY so you can`t really do too much custom work on them, I mean with hps you`re also pretty much limited to 2800k very efficient for how old they are but you get a load of orange and warm light no choice in the matter

but with cobs people now get an easy to use, cool light that can match or even beat hps for GPW yet they are not limited in size or light colour and you can build the array, driver and such yourself

they are pretty well suited for the DIY grow light crowd

and with 1000w+ cob and smd chips around now it won`t be soon till it`s considered easier to use leds, maybe 5 years or so

I mean 1000w+ smd`s make some mean side lights or even top lights and leds are easy to aim and less of a fire risk, cooler too so sometimes it`d even be worth getting less GPW because you can use more power in the same space and get more yield that way

sometimes what you can get out of the space matters more than what GPW you could get if you could get a certain light set up to work in that area

LED`s give off less heat I like them as I can normally run 2000w of led in a room where 1000w of hps would be too hot happens a lot, or I see people using 1 x 600w hps and 1 x 300w led as it`s too hot to use a 1000w hps but they wanted more yield......

but loads of 50 to 100w cobs are great as like T5`s and other tube lights you get less shadowing and more even coverage

personally I like 300w+ or 1000w+ cobs as I don`t like to have too many lights to look after

Been having a hell of a time finding anything in Canada... I've already ordered 2 more COBs, arctic paste, and kapton tape. Do the COBs need to be covered?

PPF doesn't change. Like I said, you can position your lights to get practically any ppfd want. It may be a more valuable measure, but it's pointless in saying this light is better than that light.

Phoned Mouser support, they said the power supply won't work with 4xcxb3070s?

Covered with paste no way, you just apply a dab and then slowly press them into place to spread them. Peep a video or two on youtube.

Hahaha not covered in paste sry, I'm talking about a lens of sorts?
Mouser saying the Meanwell HLG-185H-1400 won't power 4x cxb3070-0000-000N0HAB30H?

As far as I know 4 3070s will work fine on a 185... actually I have done it before.

The 3070 part number you're listing is AB bin. Look around and you can find some BBs for less money. Digikey always has the highest prices on CXBs.

Thanks, I already ordered the AB bin, is there much a difference for the $10? I used thermal adhesive, this time I'll use kapton tape and paste?

Each bin increase is about 3% more efficient. I think you will get good results with the AB bins, keep in mind for future reference that Cree bins their chips.

Damn growmau for using the kapton in that Mars video lol. Guys stop being cheap asses and buy the $2 holder. Cobit has the bjb's cheaper than ideal and they also have a small reflector built in. Use kapton to hold your wires or hold your hair back but you won't get even pressure and a long term hold with tape.

And what the fuck evilmobo? I've never had a problem with you. You just wanna jump on the bandwagon and call shit out so you can feel high and mighty?

Maybe just a different delivery. If you know 100% for sure and can back it up with links, then say it as such. If you can't, then frame it like 'I think that....' and that way it is a discussion rather than confrontational.

I think most would agree that the rhetoric and going off the deep end doesn't help anyone.
