I'm sure this is all very helpful to the op, and definitely new information not present anywhere else since the op hasn't posted in over 8 years.
Necrothreads...it's all the rage.
who doesn’t love to see a dead thread Phoenix and rise from the ashes?:P

Maybe why the big companies aren't that involved yet, could you see Philips bothering until the smoke clears, how many unsold and next generation lights would it have had to fuck around with just to get to this point. No it's not worth it until now.
Yeah im pretty sure Philips basically just jumped into the LED horticulture lighting game. They let everyone else figure out the basics and now they can pump millions into perfecting them. Ill still wait a couple generations before i make the change. I imagine once there is a Philips available to the general public those 1300$ gavitas will be hard to move at a 400$ super closeout clearance price.

I cannot see them getting cheaper, when one drops a new phosphor or red spectrum takes its place. They need to perfect cheaper lights, every year they only go up in price.

If that gavita was £300 and I needed a light it would be hard to choose anything else when replacing a 600w HP's or CMH.

How many lights are you running right now? If you have a smaller grow wouldn’t hurt to try one out if you have the money. I brought a small order of leds now I switched out all my lights. Hps make appearances sometimes during the winter

Lol, Philips has been making top tier horti diodes for a long time now. Overhead and intra canopy led systems too...... They ain't new to this game

Not new but they dont have proper fixtures for the hobby grower yet.

This winter im doing a 1000w DE HPS in a 5x5 and two 315cmh in a 5x2.66. The HPS tent runs at night when its really cold outside. The CMH during the day. Both tents stay about 72-75 lights on and 68-70 lights off. My lights are also my heaters. If i went LED I would never have enough heat. Would have to totally change around the air circulation. Hell the furnace would probably have to help keep temps up.

I don't know the new gavitas are not far from a HP's wattage, expecting some heat with them and yes diodes are all well and good but a built unit is what we want Philips to put out.

They are working on it as we speak. I wont be buying the first generation though. Likely wait for 3rd or 4th.
Philips is the perfect example of brand loyalty and why it’s important to keep product up to par..

And I see why your waiting, don’t seem like you want to fool around with the diy route or what some of these other companies are offering. But I would say it would do you good to go ahead and either for veg or one of your cycles to run led so when you do try out one of those expensive units. If you have the space you could do maybe a 2x2 couple small plants. When I first looked at LED either it was the blurpes or extremely expensive units

The quality of LEDs is there now, the only barrier to entry for me is upfront cost. I suspect prices will drop substantially over the next few years and in terms of quality, HID and LED buds are more or less equal. If I were to set up a large grow room now, I would buy HID fixtures up front and eat the higher electric costs, then replace them one by one as I'm able to. I have a fondness in my heart for HIDs, esp the CMH light, which looks lovely in the winter, but they are nearing the end of their days...once the big price drop happens, they will be but a candle in the wind...

Yeah even as someone who is relatively confident in their electrical abilities, I'm not going to risk burning the house down and insurance not covering it because it was caused by some home made grow light. UL listed is the only way to go. Even if you do everything right but there is an issue with the driver (something that you have no part in building) you will be blamed for a fire.

I have a smaller CMH tent. A single 315 costs less than a dollar a day to run. Not a big deal.

1. No. Philips is coming out with lights that are only available to a very select group of people and they are the first lights that truly blow HPS away in terms of yield per watt.

2. That would be kind of silly because your cooling/heating requirements for HPS are vastly different than LED. What you would spend in AC for a grow like that would basically give you the money for LED lights.

3. I do as well. Growing with bulbs is like a little miniature sun. Feeling that HPS light on your skin and feeling like your outside on a sunny 75 degree day when its actually -10 and theres 5 feet of snow... so refreshing. Im pretty satisfied with just doing one winter grow. The HPS does a fantastic job of self regulating grow room temps. I would have to likely heat the grow room with electric heaters to run LED and at that point im not saving any electricity.

Ohhh I see your bias you only do winter grows and what appears to be a unheated space. HPS all the way, I wouldn’t have switched over if it wasn’t for summer heat and with sog grows Led is king coverage wise..

With this influx of newbie led diyers like myself, I haven’t heard of any home fires. Most mistakes would have the light not work or problems dimming. The drivers most of us use are meanwells, reputable drivers used widely for all kinds of lighting applications. As safe or more so then these ballast that’s used with HPS.. I recall one time I was moving things around in one of my grow rooms and mistakenly caught one of my hps cords and like a ball of fire came swinging toward me I caught the bulb with my hand

Its a heated space but only about 65 degrees. I doubt many people boast about how they burnt their house down with a light they built.... Either way, it all comes down to whether or not the electronic device that caused the fire has that UL stamp.

True but I’m sure we should be able to find a couple accounts of it happening esp if it was product related. Most people on here usually just lie about yield. And for your peace of mind yes UL listed is best. Companies like HLG I would assume is a safe bet and the leds I got from them is still going strong. 65 degrees in a 4x4 tent with 500-650watts of leds could probably put you in the 80 degree range. Watt for watt between led and HPS produce the same amount of heat the difference is how it’s dispersed. In a confined space things will heat up with a led. I know I have a 3x3 fixture light in a tent at 450 watts and it’s nice and toasty in there
