new to this portion of the hobby, I have been doing a lot of reading on led lights and im sure this question has been asked 100 times before buttttttt…….
so should you use hps or are there any reputable led lights that are cost effective that actually work?
seen some 1200 watt led on amazon with mixed reviews, thoughts?

Stay away from cheap amazon lights. Either go with timber or hlg for leds or build your own or look to cmh. How big of an area are you lighting?

how about wattage on cmh? if I recall the popular wattage is 315 and 630 I think is what I saw, do they require cooling? haven't done enough research on them yet, is there a significant power consumption vs cmh and hps? thanks

8 x8 is a big jump for someone with such basic questions
but CMH and HID use power as specified no savings

315 and 630 are the only wattage other than a few stray 1000 and 400’s. Yes they’ll require cooling so do most good leds. Cmh is all about spectrum and slightly less power consumption.

The reviews are mixed for a reason.... Their crap!

Build your own COBB system LED's or there are some expensive prebuilt COBB 's out there.

Thing is, if you want to run taller plants, have a way to cool? HPS rules..

Grow shorter plants, can't cool well? COBB LED's rule.

I have plant # limits....HPS for me.

That's pretty much it. If you search this site, you'll find a number of COB builds you can do yourself for a decent price. A good COB brand is Timber. Check them out and you'll see they're pretty pricey, but when you get one you WILL KNOW where all that money went.

If it's a cheap LED and says 1000 watts, it's garbage. End of story.

If you're on a very limited budget, you shouldn't even be considering an 8 x 8 to begin with. You'd be better served going no more than 4 x 4.

8 x 8 is perfect of 4 x Hortilux EYE 1000w...145,000 lumens and 1600 umol. Each 1 will blast a 4 x 4 area with 62.5w sq/ft, and is powerful enough to grow any strain to max genetics. The sun has 1000w Sq/m. 10,000 lumens Sq/ft.. Lumens do matter, or scientists wouldn't use this measurement. Same for w/sq/m.

The 1000w HPS Hortilux is Blue Enhanced, 2100k, and can also be used from start to finish. I, and my cohorts have used these bulbs since they came out, which is 20+ years.
Id get the Magnum XXXL Hoods.. Low Profile. 40.25 x 31.75 x 12. 8 inch ducting.

I also suggest 2 x 32w Solacure UVA/B bulbs 4ft, for each 4 x 4 area.

But for me, these would be no competition for lighting an 8 x 8 area with anything other than a Hortilux, and wanting the most Bang, for the Buck.

I also love the 1000w Gavita, but they require more height, are more expensive, much hotter, and cover more area. 5 x 6 vs 4 x 4. 30sq/ft vs 16...... If you could cool them, and have the height... 4 1000w Gavitas will get you closer to replicating the sun as far as lighting intensity is concerned. 4 Gavitas in an 8 x 8 area at 40 inches would be closer to the intensity of the sun.
Sun is 1600 lumens per sq/ft. The Gavita is 166,000 lumens,....1666 lumens sq/f, but when you consider the Inverse Square Law, t will of course drop off a bit.

area will be 8x8 but not going to utilize all that space for now, (gotta crawl before I walk!!) leaning on cmh but not sure if I need 2 315's or a single 630 just to get started? eventually I would like to move to led's way on down the road as everything I have read the good ones are really expensive, just want to get rolling on a basic set up for now

Craigslist has killer deals here. Good second hand digital ballasts are around $50.
For $100 you could get a nice rig -- and a new bulb.
