i dont know a single person (out of hundreds) whos yield when down when they switched from HPS to efficient* cob rigs
*chips built since 2014 run at 75W or less
When someone quotes me out of context to help shore up their argument, I will call them on it. If you quote the entire post, a different message will emerge. You are contradicting your own argument... Provide complete quotes when you reply or your attempts to distort context may be called out. Peace.Never once have I indicated anyone should stop using HPS. There are many situations where HPS is a better option. The only reason I ever engage in any debate over this topic, I see people INSISTING that there is no way ANY LED can outperform HID lighting. Simply put, that is just not the case.
I think doing a watt by watt comparison that all agree with is extremely difficult... Your experiences match mine with COB so my COB light is currently on the shelf. My COB was very inexpensive. I switched to HPS when my LED light fried during my first flower cycle in 2012. Once you've seen what HPS produces, it sticks with you as a reference... Even though my first two LED experiences were not the greatest, I'm glad I tried COB because, as a game-changer for LEDs, I really wanted to see where the technology brought us. Best comparison will be 600w hps vs 600w cobs on a 4x4 flood and drain tray.
Growing technique must be sea of green.
I dont like it when people veg all out and scrog there plants when doing comparisons. Thats a big no no to me.
Also lights cannot interfere with the other tent.
Im a CXB3590 users, have completed about 3 grows, but for some reason i feel that the hps will still give you bigger yield. Larger buds and less fluff. I have never completed a grow with HPS but have seen them in action.
Personally i dont want to be upgrading my cobs from 600 to 2000w, if 2 x 1k HPS still does it job, and costs MUCH less.
Also many of us COB users probably havent even used HPS
Didn’t you just say your led was from 2017 but now in this post you say you switched to hid lighting after your led fried in 2012.......also sounds like you didn’t do a good job building it if it fried you must not have a firm grasp there mr electrician. Oh it also sounds like you got cheap Chinese cobs rather than a reputable brand. My COB was purchased OTS in 2017... When a person switches to HID they're not allowed to evaluate any other technologies? I didn't build my COB system and never claimed I did... I am not aware of the COBs the manufacturer used but, based on the price, they were probably cheap. LEDs have been around for quite some time... Growers were actually using discrete LED arrays before COB became available. (COB LEDs were not available in production hardware in 2012.) It's very clear you have a problem with me based on your tone and your attempts to alter my words... As unpleasant as it is dealing with immature people who can't handle a constructive dialog. You bought a cheap, pre-built COB fixture and had disappointing result. I've seen that play out countless times. And I think every reasonable proponent of LED would be fully on the same page as you in regards to your complaints about that type of light. In fact all the hardcore led nerds are the first to warn people away from those lights because they are ineffective in the extreme compared to top tier fixtures from HLG and Timber and well build diy fixtures. But why would you use the cheap light you bought as a knock against the kinds of lights the rest of us are talking about? That's like deciding that Ferrari sucks because you bought a Hyundai that you ended up being disappointed with. If my experience with my cheap COB was unique rather than common, the vendor of the cheap system would be relevant. Since every person who's purchased a COB off-the-shelf (OTS) and has had a question or problem is usually greeted with "that COB is junk" by the DIY community. If my results were formal and even close to justifying an informed discussion about the particular vendor's COB I would happily provide the transparency you request... Unfortunately, it would provide no value to the discussion and only serve to muddy the waters...@sparkygeek You said your COB was inexpensive and OTS (which I assume means 'off the shelf', as in pre-assembled) so perhaps you could just let everyone here know exactly what the light is? Manufacturer, model, that sort of thing? We could have a more informed discussion about why your experience was negative if you'd be more transparent about what you were using.

I agree with %100 of this. What is really frustrating is the low availability of high quality OTS led fixtures. As I said, HLG and Timber do it right but they sell out nearly the second they become available. As a consumer I would love it if a wealth of companies sprouted up who put out the kind of quality those companies do. Competition spurs innovation and brings prices down. But the poor quality of the vast majority of readily available ots lights leads to people feeling the way you do. Sorry I must have misread your earlier post as I thought you had built one either for yourself or a friend. I don’t have a problem with you, however if your an electrician wouldn’t you email and ask the company on the actual draw and what components they use? I mean I work with computers and networks for many clients. I always email and ask these sort of questions if they can’t answer them I’m not buying from them. I want folks that can tell me about the product inside and out especially if they selling it. I mean what if I need parts later on or warranty work. I have no issue with anyone evaluating technologies on any front but there should be some red flags waving in your head when you see certain numbers or claims.My COB was purchased OTS in 2017...
