i ADVOCATE protecting my own house silly. You protect yours, i protect mine. It is not your responsibility nor right to tell me how to protect mine.
really?

that's not what it seems like here...it seems like you advocate me being in charge of making sure my neighbor builds his house right.

As you should. Why did you not help that neighbor when you had the chance? Why did you not protect YOUR home against fire by clearing an appropriate space, removing dry/dead vegetation, roofing with tile instead of tar or wood shingles, or HELPING YOUR NEIGHBOR WHEN YOU SEE HIM DOING SOMETHING THAT HE SHOULDN'T for safety reasons?

i advocate doing what it takes to protect my home and if that so happens to include helping my neighbor do his shit up right then so be it. Still MY responsibility if i want to protect my home.

which can also take down your home in the process.

unless, of course, we do as you advocate and help our neighbor build his house right.

that kind of sounds like 'being your brother's keeper'.

Not his "keeper" but rather his "helper". Lost concept i guess.

you are contradicting yourself now.
How is that a contradiction? If i want to protect MY house then i should do what i need to short of resorting to violence or coersion imo. Giving him advice does not mean i would say "Do this or lose your home."

what if he does not follow your advice, and is obviously building a fire trap next door? do you simply allow his freedom to build a fire trap to override your freedom to not have your home burnt down by his poor workmanship?

i then protect my home against incidental fire through either insurance or through physical means (think fire-proofing, not coersion). If that is not an available option then myself and my neighbors will make him feel extremely unwelcome.
