So, I haven't had male plants in around ten years, and when I did, I certainly didn't have the time or facilities required for some small and selective breeding. Now, however, I have some males and the ability to grow them miles away from my female plants. This, and the appeal of always having a bunch of (potentially) chronic seed lying around has led me to pick out some intended projects. First, from the TGA freebies, I have very healthy Chernobyl plants in both male and female form; while it is a little early to really judge the quality, both are of good health and I have heard and seen great things about this strain, so collecting some pollen from the male is a no-brainer. Furthermore, with the amount of genetic variety in TGA's seeds, it is likely that I'd get a whole bunch of different phenos from the cross, which would be fun.
Next up at bat is my 'Pineapple Express' of questionable origin, which had both an excellent sativa high and an insanely fast finishing time (51 days) although a rather modest yield (3 oz dry from a 5 gallon DWC bucket) which was partly my fault as by the fourth or fifth week of flowering it was obvious I should have topped her instead of going for LST. However, the quality of the finished herb was absolutely top-shelf; and in addition to maintaining the line, I'm very interested in playing in its genetic sandbox, so to speak. I have selected three partners for one of these lucky ladies. Two will be slightly different phenos of the limited edition Beyond the Brain from Mandala Seeds, which is a cross between their Satori parent line and a Columbian landrace Sativa/Haze; which is supposedly a high potency high energy Sativa, much as the future mother is, but both these intended fathers got just gigantic in veg. I have three female BTBs in Flowering right now, and if the quality does look very promising I will probably also start a bx with a branch or two on the best looking one. The third father is from Mandala's Safari Mix, I have no idea what he is at all, but he is magnificent. Although he really looks indica-dom, if I could get a female plant with his growth pattern I would just die, this dude is a SOG grower's wet dream, with a very highly branched growth pattern that is almost entirely vertical growth, and an incredibly sharp scent that has both very strong herbal notes as well as a very strong chemmy/cleaner in the background. He is also massive, and so this could be a 'just-for-fun' cross that could have some surprisingly fun results.
So, in a couple days, I will be whisking away these males, (after cutting them back all crazy like) and flowering them at my fortress of solitude, where I will bloom them and collect a reasonable amount of their pollen before giving them a merciful death. Pictured are the female chernobyl and pineapple (the slightly further along female), and the male chernobyl (A5) Beyond the Brain (A2) and Safari (A
