lets talk about heat output of HID lights

ok riu, heres the thing, i'm growing in what would be my laundry room, it fits a full size washer and dryer so its roughly 6-7 ft long, about 4 feet deep and apt ceiling height, like 7 feet or so. i recently purchased a 1000w HPS setup on sale for super cheap ($100!!) from a head shop that was liquidating its growing equipment. what i'm wondering, is how much heat does a 400W HPS put out and how much does a 1000W put out? with a 400 is ventilation going to be necessary in a room that size? i know a 1000 is going to get really hot but i'm not sure how to safely ventilate without modifying my walls.

TL;DR how hot do 400w HPS bulbs get, and do i need to ventilate in a 4x7x7 "closet"

Have you ever used a 400 watt electric heater? That is how how your bulb gets..
Isn't there a dryer vent in that room?

as a laundry room it should have a vent somewhere already for the dryer ... just tag into it ... may have to use a carbon filter though ... those vents are usually pretty low ....

Depends on ambient temperature. A 400w bulb will heat the room up quite a bit. My 600w runs in a room 5x6x8 and ups the temperature by ~20 degrees when not vented. My 1000W light upped my entire 10x30'x15' cabin by 10degrees - if you were to run it in that room venting would be necessary regardless.

I agree with looking for a dryer vent. I exhaust out of a bathroom exhaust fans ducting.

yeah theres a dryer vent, it exhausts outside about 8 feet up so i assume it goes over my kitchen and outside (laundry room is in kitchen, opposite the window to outside) so i could definitely exhaust there. would pre-existing lint buildup in the duct be anything to worry about? i assume not since you said it only heats up 10-20 degrees. aside from that, i suppose just a carbon scrubber would be all i need..

Hey hey,

Lint in the duct won't matter unless you pull INTO it from outside..
Otherwise, it will all blow out when you hook up your inline fan.
I love carbon scrubbers. I use them as scrubbers in sealed rooms.. I am not sure if you get 100% clean if you blow out of them..
You could always add an ONA block or an ozone generator to the line leading off the scrubber... that would double or triple-up your smell removal factor.

thanks, i'm only growing two plants at the moment and who knows if i'll get lucky and end up with a female so the smell shouldn't be too bad. i hadn't looked into the ona block really but for the price i'm quite interested. do they work well?

Yeah, they are great.. You just take off the cap or drill a few hole in it.. You can throw the block in your ducting..
cheap and effective.. They last a month or more, depending..
