Lets talk pot sizes

Some people say they can perform just as well in three gallon pots compared to five gallon pots.

I know it all depends on what type of grow you are doing..obviously a SOG type grow wont need a full five gallons of soil to grow a successful crop. There just is not enough time for roots to develop.

Someone out there may know what is best for a long veg period (8weeks). Would you say bigger is better? Bigger is worse?

I started in 3 gallon pots...until pots were full of roots. Then transplanted to whopping seven gallon pots. Did i do the right thing or is 7 gallons a little overkill for this situation?

Can anyone tell me how many inches a 3 gallon pot is? all the pots i have found at the store dont say how many gallons they are they just say the inches? any help would be great. sorry dont want to hijack.

It's all relative, and by that I mean it is YOUR grow so doing what you did is going to be a learning experience for you and the answers to your questions are gonna vary greatly based on what others have learned/experienced before you.

It'll depend to large degree on your light. If you're running 1000W or more, I'd say 7 gal is cool, not overkill. A 5-gal would've probably done, but...

I use wastepaper baskets from wal-mart. Drill holes in the bottom and add some rock. They are twelve and eight liter containers, tall and durable. Got them on sale for $2.12

You can see in the pic, some are two gallon containers and a couple are three gallon containers.

I grew 4 strains in 3 gallon pots. I am going to try 2 gallon'ers with 6 this time. It all depends on how much light you have and how much veg time you are doing. I vegged for about 2 months for the 3 gallons. This time, I only vegged for 2 months and am doing 2 gallons. The 3 gallons were under a 400W HPS and got about 3.5 feet tall with an ounce per plant. Now, having learned a lot i did LST just as clones rooted and am going to have a sea of green. If you want it faster, smaller... go 2 gallons. If you have more space and time to veg.. 3-5 gallons.

Bigger pots =bigger roots= biggerplants= more bud sites=more bud=more smiles as long as all the other elements are dialed in...

I personally use 5 gal pots witha 24-25 daye veg

Didn't think to mention earlier.. Last year, I grew out all the way in 2-gal pots. I had four fems hit about 5 feet each; very nice yield under 400W HPS. When I took the root balls out, they fully occupied the pots, although not anywhere near root bound. However, I definitely think they could have prospered from another gallon to knock around in and the fresh soil that goes with it. An up-can from 2 to 3 gal right before 12/12 would have, I think, given them a chance to build that root system out a little more and finish better. That's where they came up short - there were some areas on the plants that just wouldn't finish no matter what. I think more roots may have helped that.

We'll see -- I'm going to upcan to 3 gal this year.

Good idea mang, this would be good for a hydro type setup...a bunch of tall trashcans can all fit in a large resevoir. flood and drain possibly?

I actually grow in coco coir but next grow i think i am going to go back to soil. I built a little hydro setup to squeeze in a clone to 12/12 for some extra weight. gypsy did a good job im proud and jealous. i dont think my grow space is practical for trees. i dont have a whole room devoted to growing only a closet.

I guess 7 gallon pots arent so bad then. I had a long veg time too!

So i think we conclude, more space the better. or whichever is more practical for the situation in which you are growing in.

smart - i like it. the most important thing is adding the holes, and the rock.

2 - 3 - 4 - 10 gallons. it's not the size of the pot, that makes the plant grow.
on the other hand - if you (know how to) grow a large plant, you need a large pot.

by the time you know how large you can grow your plant, you likely know how big a pot you need.

im performing an experiment right now. Im running 5 gallon squares vs 2 gallon Airpots round. I have it in my grow journal. We will see what happends

ive seen big plants with big yeilds in as little as 1 gallon pots so your pot size does not matter and there is no such thing as root bound
