Liberals approve first saliva screening roadside test for marijuana

OTTAWA — Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould is giving the green light to a new roadside test to check for drugs.

On Monday, Wilson-Raybould approved the Drager DrugTest 5000 as the first saliva screening equipment to be used by law enforcement to test for THC, the main psychoactive agent in cannabis.

The equipment will now be made available to police forces across the country, but the government says it will still be up to police forces to decide what testing equipment they want to use.

Manufacturers have told the government that they could meet demand for roadside saliva testing equipment within four to six weeks.

Legislation that passed Parliament in June allows for the use of roadside saliva tests to detect the presence of drugs like cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana.

The Liberals have pledged $161 million in funding for police training and drug-testing equipment over the next five years, as well as a public awareness campaign about the perils of driving while high.

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police said last month that it is unlikely to reach its goal of having 2,000 officers trained to spot drug-impaired drivers when marijuana becomes legal later this year.

Cannabis will become legal for recreational use on Oct. 17.

I'm starting to wonder what's going to happen with pre-employment drug testing.

I was told today one of the companies I deal with at work are requiring drug testing as of a couple weeks ago before doing any work with/for them. Seems pretty backwards considering we're a couple months away from legalization.

I've been doing some looking around on the net but can't find much mention of work place drug testing.

Recreational cannabis and work place drug testing are two seperate topics.

Your aloud to drink beer recreationally. Are you aloud to drink at work ?

You sound like their going to let you blaze blunts at work after oct 19.

Companys still have the right to pisstest their employees pre empoyment and post incident if they want . Thats not going to change.

Sounds to me like you're quite uninformed. I never made one mention of smoking while at work (I never would even if I could). Blazing blunts at work? C'mon, simmer down.

A U/A test on a moderate to heavy user can show positive a month or more after their last smoke.

As with alcohol testing I've seen guys get pickled the night before and pass with flying colours, while people like me who rather smoke would fail even after a week without a toke.

The point was, for a company that never required a pre-employment test even 3 months ago, is now recently (within the last month) requiring the standard U/A. Does this not seem like one step forward and two steps back?

Do a bit of reading on drug testing and you'll see how it really only discriminates against pot smokers.

I agree it does. But realistically , i still believe employers will have the last say.

As well as land lords

I wish it wasnt that way but , thats my guess

They will, but they shouldn't. If it comes down to it I'll just tell them how it is. They can fire me or keep me.
It shouldn't be that way though, in my opinion.

Up to the government at this point to step in.

Landlords is a whole different ballgame. I believe they should have the say as it is their property in the first place. Just like it is with pets and smoking.
I'm just a "bad" tenant, but I've been screwed by enough of these big-name property rental places.
