Best way to prep a tote is to spray paint it black with paint for plastic. Then when it is dry paint it white. The black cuts light penetration and the white will keep it a tad cooler under lights.
I also have one corner of my lid open slightly for airlines to get in. I made a "skirt" of sorts out of blackout fabric and velcro'd it around that corner. No significant klight can get in.
