light proofing a white bucket?

ha i forgot i posted this thread. but i just bought a couple black bucket and lids from us plastics and line the other white one i had with thick black heavy duty trash bags with the pull string and overlapped the edge and sinched the string down and tied it as for the lids i just used black adhesive vinyl.
 
light will not damage your plants.roots or anyhting else thru the bucket . . . . . am i missing somthing

and black plastic wrapped around bucket will increase heat in the root zone . . . which is bad . . .. .

white reflects black absorbs light(aka heat)

I think your missing a couple of things. Here goes.
1. Roots don't like light. They hate it and they die.
2. As his OP said, hes doing a DWC. Algae forms on the water if light is allowed to penetrate.
 
i see resevior containers that are all different colors . .. . . .. . . . .white purple blue . . . .dont make a difference light is not going to get threw . . . . .. .

algea forms from lots of things . . . .bad environment for one . .. my coco is never dry always wet and with above said statement i should have algea all over the surface on my pots and well i dont . .. . the reason i bring this up is because algea is a symptom of a problem

light and heat are normally not the culprit of the problem they just dont help it . . . .environment is, create the proper environment for your roots and no algae build ups will happen because the system will naturally take car of its self

focus on creating the perfect enviroment vs non issues like plastic buckets and how much light a white one lets though . . . if you do it right . .no light should ever reach the bucket as DWC veg and grow fast and in the proper set up your should have monster that shade the there buckets quickly
 
samwell, grow with a white bucket and see what happens. you get green roots and green algae. green = photosynthesis = light. no light, no problem.

coco isnt dwc. very different. coco blocks light like soil does.

Dude youre talking a lot of waffle here..... It seems you don't include light and heat as part of the roots 'environment' but call them 'non-issues' ? WOW. Then sheeplish say at the end, 'if you do it right no light should reach the bucket'.

Youve obviuosly never grown in dwc so why don't you just leave the advice to the people that have? If you want to use a white bucket for a DWC come back and tell us how it went. Don't try an reinvent the wheel here, because this information has been obtained with data from thousands of DWC users.

Black buckets work great, White buckets don't.
 
yes very nice... thats what im working toward... its hard to get them all rigged up when you already have plants in them haha. but the roots look nice... with white ones your roots will actually be GREEN, as well as algae. I think if green light comes through its probably the best kind, cause that's the color they don't actually use (reflected).
 
LOL does the guy with the green buckets give his roots hair cuts? Never seen some so shapely before but yet sparse.

oh and I guess on that principle black blows green out of the water per say... lol.

Buckets and set up aren't mine. I was asking in behave of a fellow RIU member. He already has some sort of slime, I told him I felt it was the buckets, he seems to disagree. I believe the buckets let enough light in and allow light loving bacteria to gain a foot hold on his hydro system.

Either that or the pre-constructed system (passive underflow DWC) he bought does not provide adequate oxygen to his root system causing the roots slowly suffocate causing the slime in his buckets.

I told him to replace the buckets with black buckets but I dont think we wants to do that, I cant blame him, assuming he just payed $539.00 for a 4 bucket hydro system ($439 + $99 for shipping) I too would be hesitant to change them out.

I agree, your roots look awesome, black buckets are superior to those green ones (IMHO). I have grown with a number of different hydro systems (including dwc bubble bucket like yours), different types of plants (fruits, peppers, herbs), learned that ANY light to the root zone is a bad thing, Period.

Btw BigBudda, what are you growing? I have some nice Habanero peppers growing as we speak. :fire:
 
be cheap and get tin foil+duct tape, its also the easy solution here. use the sanded side out (diffracts light).

it can look clean if you do it right.
