It looks like a mogul socket without a ballast(looks like a HPS bulb in the pic).... It also kind of looks like a medium to mogul socket converter with a HPS in it..... If you go HID you'll need a ballast. If you go 100+w CFL they sometimes come with mogul sockets and would be able to plug into and standard outlet(120V/60Hz... depending on the bulb).

yea i wana get this i wanna go HPS.. im new to it still and learning the sockets and bulbs...ballast and all..thanks alot forthe help..soo if it is a mogul socket and forsure its a hps set up..wat kinda ballast would i need...it says in the description that i can use any bulb except the BTwat ever lol.. and i was jus gonna get a 400watt hps bulb..so if it is a medium to mogul socket converter , i can jus plug this into the wall with a 400watt hps bulb????

If you plugged an HPS bulb into a regular socket it wouldn't work. They require a ballast/capacitor/ignitor.

You should also make sure your ballast is for 120V/60Hz, so you can plug it into your wall. Some are higher voltage and won't work in a standard outlet.

You should only use a bulb that matches the wattage of the ballast.
