That red thing on the side slides up and down (2nd pic)
One way it will stay on all the time and on the other it will go on and off as your timer is set
I have the same timer as the one in the first pic and it works just fine with no problems

i also have both timers and both mines werks fine. both timers have the manual override which is the tabs on the side like tom said, 1st timer the red is for lights to go off and green is for on, 2nd timer u have to the black tabs is for every 15mins so if u want it on from say 7am to 7pm then push all the tabs down from 7 to 7. but not wantin to sound like a dick but those are prtty ez to use man basically jus plug in and its set

Same here, I use them too. Rotate the dial to where the lights should be off, then flick that red switch. When they go off, you know you're in the right position. :)

I'd suggest spending the extra few dollars and buying digital. I don't suggest this just because yours don't work. I suggest digital timers to every one for one reason: If you ever have a power outage, they keep time and will still come on and go off at the times you program. With these types, if the power goes off, they stop until the power comes back on. That throws everything off...

The best time to have a power outage is when the lights are off, of course. :-) And then you sit and hope that it the power comes back on before the lights turn on. and again, if you are using digital timers, they will come on at the right time...with these, they won't..

Good luck either way dude...
