Well are you talking about the HPS or flo??? They both have distinct different optimum space from the light

I have fluorescent T-12's and keep them anywhere from 2-4 inches from my 2 plants. Remember the further the light is away will cause the plant to stretch. The tubes do not get hot at all. The cfl's tend to get a but more hot but that's nothing a little household fan won't take care of. Hope this helped.

Hank.

When you first put the plants under an 600w HPS, I would keep them at least 18" away (probably more). Every day i would lower the light an inch or three and keep a close eye on the plants for signs of heat damage (like very 10 min. or so for the first hour). Eventually you can get them pretty close. You can get them real close if you use an air-cooled reflector with glass enclosure.

A good rule of thumb is if your hand can stay under the light (where the tops of the plants are) and it is not uncomfortably hot, your plants should be OK. But do keep a close eye on them at first.

ok so i should have them 2 inches away for the floresent light and when i am flowering with the hps i should have them 20 inches away them move closer

I don't have experience with the fluorescent so can't say. But a 600w HPS will get hot especially if it isn't air cooled. If you have a glass cover, you can get closer. But yes, I'd keep it 20" away at first and keep an eye on the plants.
