In reply to your question about T5s I recommend that you check out "SunBlaze." They have 2' T5 HO full spectrum (6500k) tubes complete with ballast and all for $28. I'm not trying to advertise for them, I just use their product and I am very happy. I would discourage you from buying bulbs from wal-mart. Even if they are tubes and say "plant and aquarium." I found out that those run at only about 4500k. For vegging you need 6500k. Also the bulbs at wal-mart, lowes, and home depot are for the most part T12s. The difference? T12s are about an inch thick, T5s are really skinny, but MUCH MORE efficent. They put out more lumens, higher quality spectrum, and use less energy than T12s.
TO bicycle ryders comment, aquarium lights (some kinds) can be used for growing (I work in an aquarium. THe hydro shop would certainly have what you need, as that is where I bought my T5s. Look around. Good luck.
