Lighting for a 32"x32"x48"

I personally do not care for LEDs. Too expensive and too involved on what I think is the most negligible aspect of growing. So many other things attribute to a quality flower, light is just the limitation.

That being said I personally would use an air-cooled 1000watt switchable digital ballast. EYE Hortilux MH & HPS bulbs. Anyone on Amazon with good reviews is fine. 600 would work too. (Edited: I realized after I typed everything that your height is limited to 48" - use an air-cooled 400w or try the LED thing)

If you're set on LED these (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HFZ3PC2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_OSptybW18E34A) are giving folks on Reddit.com/r/microgrowery good results. You need 2x over a 24"x24" space so I'd say you need 4x in your space. You can buy two now and two after you save up.

Why would you want to waste more than double the wattage for the same product using outdated, inefficient, and occasionally dangerous technology? COBs aren't that expensive, especially if you DIY with Vero or Citi. Hell, it might even cost near equal or a little bit more than what a quality HID costs, and your electric bill will be forgiving while you achieve the same weight,

Why are you so positive cobs are the best for every situation?

With the low ceiling height of original poster on this thread aren't cobs going to be too powerful. Even a 400 HPS would be pushing it in that space.

I still say good coverage of t-5's would be perfect for the op. Sure vegges me nice plants. And more thc with a uv+ or 2 thrown in there.

Give me more information on Vero and Citi, please. Id like to be able to pull the same weight a 600 gives me in a 38x28x72 without the heat issues.

What about for larger setups, I'm used to a 1000w over a 5x5 foot print. It gives me the same results consistently. For 200-300$ invested in equipment. You're saying that can be done with Cito Vero?

Apparently Rahz has even pulled 1.7GPW pretty much effortlessly, he stated in another post. Like, I have full confidence in these lights and their ability to perform. If I achieve 1.7GPW, that's 409g. Even if you yielded more than that with your 600w, you have to admit, for 241w, that is a super impressive yield, and it speaks for COB, watt-for-watt.

I never said the best answer for everything. They are just the efficient LED answer everyone has been waiting for. Ones that actually work.

Within 5-10 years, Cannabis will likely be legal, but they are already on the verge of outlawing HPS where legal. Due to safety hazards as well as because grow houses are depleting energy as soon as it's being produced.

I can cover a 4.5x4.5 with my 241w with around the same power as a 600w HPS. Yes, it can easily be done, and has been done with COBs.

48" isn't that low, if he can cool it a 600 would be great. If you can get the same result from some LEDs that waste less power and cause less heat that's probably a good thing in this scenario. For a 20x20 flowering room LEDs don't seem to be practical. Wish it were different, looks way cooler in a grow room than that fracking orange. If he can't cool the space a few of those cheap LEDs I linked should get the man some fresh produce.

Not practical? You should talk to @Growmau5 @ttystikk and a few others. They do bigger grows than I do with COBs.

It's your only answer. Even when it's not the question. They are just lights. And they are not proven to be the best of anything. Double ended HPS and 10k with uv for the last 2 weeks is the industry standard. And led came out before double ended. If it is so cost effective why didn't the commercial grows switch?

I have known commercial growers for 30 years or so. None of the ones I still know have gone cob. And some of these guys are huge. Bet they have done the cost analysis. And not just on a closet.

And one town in the most stuck up and money hungry areas of Colorado is the only place I know of with the ordinance you speak of. Has this regulation spread?

How many plants have you grown to completion with cobs? Can I see some?

Cooling a 600 is only one issue. I keep mine 18" to 2 feet from the canopy. Too much light closer even in my open room.

I think a 400 is the limit. Or maybe a 315 but they would limit you to 2 feet for your plant and its pot.

T-5's for the win here. 8 inches to the canopy. Grow 18" to 2 ' plants. 1 foot for the pot 2 feet for the plants. An a little room to spare and easy cheap cooling too.

I have grown none to completion with COBs. I don't need to, as I see how much faster and bigger this grow is, compared to plants that yielded QPs under 500w of BlackStar LEDs in the past.

Like I said, before naysaying, watch my grow to completion and you will see.

I didn't mean to start a full fledged debate with my question. I am a relatively new grower and I only grow for myself. While COB's may be the most EFFICIENT light, they are beyond what I am willing/able to spend on an upgraded light system. Also, having to order part after part to have a functioning light is a HUGE turn off. I don't care if they would triple my yield it is not convenient nor practical for my purposes. I have looked at that Meizhi panel quite a bit that was linked a few posts back and while it is an attractive price point some of the research I've come across is that the Mars or Vipar for $10-$20 more puts out more usable light. Looking at say a 400w HPS how hot do they get in a space as small as what I have to work with? I'm using a 120cfm fan with a DIY filter on it... would I need to upgrade that system if I opted for HPS?

I was just asking. I want to see the results. I just don't see how you can recomend something with out having consistent results with it. No cred without the results first. I don't think the light matters as much as you are saying anyway. I can buy replacement bulbs for a decade before an LED would beat them for cost effectiveness and I keep seeing pre mature failures. I just put a new bulb in. Or replace a ballast. And I haven't even had to do that yet. For years.

Top shelf gear costs, don't know what to tell you there, bro.

If you have only between the ViparSpectra and Mars to choose from, go Vipar. However, speaking from experience, for $50 more than the ViparSpectra V450, you can get a Tasty T1 unit that puts out more than two V450s combined for only 85w of light. I used to use two V450s and one of my 78w (89w with fan) T1s blew both of those away.

I needed a 6 inch fan to keep a 400 HPS in an air cooled hood in a 4x4 tent cool. And it had to be vented outside in summer and supplemented with house a/c

In winter I turned the fan speed down and heated my living room with the exhaust.

Your math is heavily flawed. Vipar 450 is $139.99 whereas Tasty T1 is $205.
