you should only put a bulb into a matching ballast, so if your ballast is for 400w then only use 400w bulbs and i know Home depot sells mh and hps but i don't know if they have a conversion bulb. any hydro store if there is one where you live will have them, and some garden supply type stores carry them.

yea i called Lowes and home depot and they carry only the bulbs not the conversion, how would i look up a local hydro store or garden supply in my area?? and the ballast i have dont say what kinda bulb it will run ive put both 250watt and 400watt and they both work the ballast i have are the ones you see when you walk into a "homedepot" or wal-mart and when u look up and see those big ass mh lights up there... thats what i have

at a hydro store the guy who runs it probably grow too. but if they get nosey tell them the truth that your starting an indoor garden and your wanting to grow tomatoes.

hmm simple enough...i want the hps 400watt but i dont have that much money for a light ballast hood and that is over priced in my eyes thats why it would be nice to find a conversion bulb, i found a site that said if u have a mh ballast and if it runs a 400watt mh light i can get a 360watt hps gives off a lil more light than the 400mh, so i guess if i could find like 4 of those bulbs id be a happy camper

Yeah you have to match the bulb to the ballast.A smaller bulb might come on but if you put a 250 watt bulb in a 400 watt ballast it will eventually explode and catch fire as your toasting the bulb as its not made for the current load. Then you wanna make sure its an mh ballast and not an hps as you can swap bulbs unless as you asked about its a matched wattage conversion bulb. Its actually cheaper to buy a new digital switchable ballast then a single conversion bulb alone. The conversion bulb will like be over $100 and a new 400 watt digital switchable ballast can be bought for $99. A simple wing reflector costs about $29 from sunleaves at www.wormsway.com its called the sunwave. The lights at wal mart or such can be mh or hps depends on the store and are 250 up to 1000 watts. Its will be on the ballast head somewhere or inside on a label or there should be a maker and model just google it.Do not use unmatched wattage bulbs opr after the fire or the hot shards of glass rip through your flesh you ll be very sorry you didnt
