Lighting Uncertainties

Yo Peeps, I'm pretty Newb when it comes to growing indoors, and I have a few uncertainties about lighting.

First off, I have some seedlings growing that I got from a Beautiful Female whom got knocked-up buy some Male Hooker [not my plants, I'm smarter than that]

(Bastard Male! I'm Heterosexual! [my grow philosophy]).

Then I germinated them (a couple were completely out of shell, with a 1" root in 3 Days! [I germinated them on my Theatre Systems 12" Subwoofer, playing music daily, as I still do, but they are no longer on the Sub]).

Then I Planted them in Organic Miracle Grow Soil.

Then I started lighting them with a cheap, wal-mart bought, 850 Lumen Compact Fluorescent (when I say cheap, I mean that the total cost for the light-bulb and a Snickers was $5.16).

It's all in a neat "Seedling-Start-Box" I built; for before The closet setup is ready. Plus It all has good airflow from a computer fan I set up. In addition, it has a shelf system for moving the plants to and from the light (I'll post Pics soon).

From my understanding, 850 Lumens is kinda weak?
But considering I initially started them (successfully) with a less-than-average size, 60-watt GE Reveal "full spectrum" Lamp Bulb (that isn't even Lumen Rated), there doing wickedly good for the weak start. Plus, they're Considerably Happier with the new bulb.

What amount of Lumens should I be shooting for?

What for, and when during growth should I use the 18on/6off, 12/12, light timing?

Since no one wants to help the stupid newb I'm just gonna go for it...

So I bought a 4` Flouro. Ballast, and 3050 Lumen "Daylight" Flouros.
Lined my closet with a plastic DropCloth
Installed the lights
Set up my baybies
Set an ocsillating fan in front of `em
Put it all on a grounded 10 amp outdoor light timer
Then started a light cycle of 16 on/8 off
Plus I got a Ph kit, nice to have

I also got a bunch of this shit from a chemist who maintains GolfCourse Greens  It has some Zinc, Magnese, and misc. others in it; it is leaf feed system, but I found a niffty use for it; By anding a minute amount to my Tap water with a Ph of 7.5, I can bring it to 6.5-7.0, for soil growing, and by making a bit stronger mixture, 5.0-5.5 which is recomened for hydroponics; I use about 6.8-7.0 mix for regular watering, and about 5.0-5.5 mix for leaf feed once a week.
Doing Good so far...

your floro's are great for veg, ge daylight bulbs are fantastic.

if you add a kitchen and bath tube, you may have slightly better vegging results.

that 4' will work for veg, but you'll need more lumens for flowering, aim for 20,000lum.

make sure lights are atleast 2 inches away from plant so they dont stretch and your doing great so far on my first grow im using 4 23w 6400 lumens all together (2700k) each and a 7w 2700k CFL's for vegging so your doing good

I found one of my 4 plants laying limp on the soil after some errands today. It is still green, but I'm not sure what happened to it, so I staked it up (young, only has 1st leafs).
When I found it the Temp. was 77 degrees F.
Don't think it went under 70 today.
Any ideas?

it probably just stretched and fell over; when you transplant, bury the stem up to the cotyledons (small bean leaves) and your plant will be better supported.

The limp one didn't make it...
2 of them are doing awsome, and the other 1 (I believe it's a different Strain) is doing great, but growing much slower. (I think it's from a transplant I had to do, its working on its roots)

I'm having digital camera problems right now, I'll get pics soon...

i had a semi successful grow using only (1) 4' flourescent shoplight in a 1x4x4h box. I used to cool white bulbs for seedling and veg, then switched out 1 of the cool white bulbs to a warm white bulb for flowering. I had 2 females. 1 did great with small to medium sized dense buds, the other was very very stringy, low yeild, but decent to smoke. The more i read the more i think it was absolute blind luck since i only had about 1700 lumens in there. Jorge Cervantes book mentions 2000 lumens are the min to sustain growth, 7000-7500 lumens for "magazine cover" like buds
P.S. Walmart sells a 42w CFL from GE that puts out 2700 lumens and screws in a regular light socket. Good Luck

you can also keep the flouros within a fraction of 1 inch to the tops of the plants. Its pretty much necessary
