Lighting upgrade

I currently have a 400watt HPS in a cooltube, and want to upgrade to either 600watt HPS, or a 400watt LED like the attached. My area is 5x5, but usually only utilize 4x4 of the area.

Heat is not an issue as the ambient temp usually is around 63f year around outside the tent. Actually have to add heat even in summer, and nearly close down any venting just to keep temps.

Which way would you guys go?

Take a peak at the migro YouTube channel, they make leds and do reviews.

Spend a little more and get a quality led. Hlg, chilled,photontek, next light, growers choice, photobio

Any one of these. You can start small and add more light bars and/high wattage drivers as your go when your want. Made in USA and ships pretty fast. I have smaller ones but they are briiiiight. Love the ChilLED’s

I have 2 X3 500 watt ChilLED lights and a smaller 200 watt small space light (sorry I don't remember the name).

I got an 10 oz plant last season in hydro using the 2 X3s

And did pretty well with the smaller light.

ChilLED lights are easily some of the best you can get, and some might say their Ultra series ARE the best. At least at the top of the list for efficiency.

But, don't use their ratchet hangers. I had a light fall when both hangers failed, and when I got the small light one of the ferrules on a ratchet hanger wasn't even crimped. Just buy new ones

600 watts of either type if you are in a 4x4 space. Get 1000 watts if you ever plan to light the entire 5x5

If it's that cold then don't go for led, they require +80F in order to grow properly.
Also, a 400w in a cool tube for a 4x4??? That seems very low intensity in comparison to most around here.

I'd just by some CMH and be done with it. 2 x315 CMH should flower that tent really well. But you can start with one as well. For a square foot print with 2 lights batwing reflectors is a good fit for light throw.

I am giving the Sonofarm a shot. American made, warranty, samsung diodes, meanwell driver. Seems to be good quality put into it from what I've read. Time will tell though.

I agree on the 400Hps being inadequate, its what i had from a smaller grow some years back. Used it cause i had it.

Worst case scenario is i use both the 400 LED and the 400HPS.

I have a 630 DE CMH that kills it in a 4x4, and I'm currently using a Medic Grow Fold 8 because I needed less heat during the summer. I'll harvest in a couple of weeks and see how the LED did compared to the CMH, but I can tell you the yield will be quite a bit greater. The CMH grows killer quality buds, if you want to stick with HID, but I'm loving the Fold 8. Look into a bar light, the even spread is such a nice change from HID, you can really make the most out of a 4x4 with them. I should also mention I run the Fold 8 at 80%, which comes out to about 550 watts, so more bud for a little less power is a nice bonus.

I agree with you. If you don't have sufficient heat 2 CMH lights would be best for a 4X4. I've never used a double ended CMH. In my mind 2 lights would give you a nicer footprint
