I'm looking at a 250w HPS..how many plants would that support? Imagine it would only be $10-$15 a month on 12-12?
u got to add in the fan running cost whichshould be much
at 10 cent per kilo watt that light will use 3000 watts a day thats 3 kw or 30 cent so for a month it will cost $9 fan might bump it up to 11-12
my rate is 10 cent per kw your mght be slightly higher

Most of the USA is around ~.10-.12 cents a KWH.

a 1000w light uses 12KWH on a 12 hours on/12 hours off cycle a day or about $1.25

This equals about $37.50 for a 30 day Month.

8 1000w Lights buring in Flower will add a min of $300.00 to the Electric side of your bill.

Portable A/c generally will use about 700-1000w per hour average during 12 hour days and can usualy just be counted as a extra light.

A DEHUMIDIFIER AND A LARGE FAN OR SET OF FANS CAN USE ABOUT 700-1000W per hour and I generally count them as extra Lights together.

A Good 8 light setup ADDs $400/month to my "Normal" bill everytime.

FAB trying to find my past months bill now, if not I'll call tomorrow!!!

for a small set up not that important if higher it wont add much unless power company is outragous
but its always good to knowand once u get it i can figure your cost

and u can do other things to offset cost look if they have off peak hrs rate and peak hrs rate look for that to

and u can change all other lights in house to cfl if u havent already
and turn out lights when not in room and turning off a computer when not using saves big time
did u know a desk top uses about as much as a 400w does
and a microwave uses same amount or more then 2 600 w lights
and u can adjust your home ac thermostat by one degree and makes a difference
cut back in other areas and uwill find u can not see in raise in the bill might make it lower

The U.S National average is actually $0.16 per kilowatt hour at the lowest tier. Adding 8,000w to your grow will easily push you into the highest tier of up to $0.30. Some people pay as high as $0.19 for their first tier. A good 8 light setup will run you closer to $750 a month.

Depends where you are... I have one place that pays .19 cents and another that doesnt...

I'd agree that .16 cents is probally a average for the U.S. between heavy users and low users...

But both places including Gas dont cost more than $750.00/month each... that seems high..

At $0.16 per kilowatt hour you are paying $57.60 a month per light. So that's $460 just in lighting for an 8k grow. Not including the a/c you would need to cool that, fans, dehumidifiers, etc... I think you probably have a REALLY great rate if you are paying less than that. Plus, none of this factors in a probable rate increase for high usage. You would be in the highest tier pulling that much power; especially in a residential setting.

Thanks everyone!!! I'll get back to you FAB..lets say I did go CFL, what would be needed to get a good yield out of 2-3 plants? Keep in mind I want the least number of lights as possible..

Just as a suggestion but you might want to consider T5HO lighting for a smaller grow. There are a few good posts on T5's and you can get a decent yield by LST'ing or Scrog'ing, ect... 8 bulb 4 foot T5HO would be great for 3 nice size plants (lst or scrog) with 4 weeks veg.
Would give you a better footprint than the single CFL's.
Good luck

least 300 w but 400 is better
but instead of big 125 watt bulbs i like the 27 watt ones in 4 pack for like $5-7 bucks then u can spead them around
and if u break one doesnt shut down grow

if u need help designing some kind of fixture let me know i can help with build and wiring

FAB I know nothing about wiring haha!! If I buy a complete light kit, could I take the reflector off and hang the bulb vertically? Also, what about the 75w HPS for one plant..would that do anything?
