I'm not following this thread but for the record, I grow in DWC and do not use a meter, seldom if ever change the res water, throw food at them like they were pigeons, and go the whole grow without adjusting pH once, and I never check water temps.

For chrissake's people, they're weeds!

ps I get 2 oz cured bud per each of 6 NL plants under 400w hps - works for me

This is a little misleading buddy, I can guarantee you didn't start out this way. Sure when you have the experience and know your nutes and the variables to your specific environment you can do it easy peasy. But tell me, say you moved locations, to another state even. You can't tell me that when you do that first grow in the new environment you won't be checking ppm, ph, temps, Rh etc. if you didn't that would just be asking for trouble.

I can grow in my space without meters and whatnot, because I've done it enough to know. If I moved or started an op elsewhere you can bet I'd have my meters out and in use! I also feel I'm spoiled growing in Cali because it is so easy, but I could definitely see changes if I was growing somewhere humid like back east or some shit. My tap is less than 200 ppm and I use it, I have a friend in another city only 40 minutes away and his tap is over 800 ppm! So initially, like I said, yeah you would be wise to learn your specific variables and environment that can only be done with meters.

I wasn't taking a dig at you because I could say the same thing about it being just a weed and easy to grow.

There are clearly two issues.

1) The characteristics of the cultivar. (I.E. Cannabis vs Tomatoes, Sativa vs indica, etc.)

2) The characteristics of an indoor garden. (I.E. condensation, temp, RH, ppm, hydro-delivery system, Etc.)

While it is true, only the worst monsters born from H1 breading require specific/advanced care, Cannabis is a relatively simple plant to finish.

Running an artificial environment, usually within ANOTHER artificial environment, can get tricky because nature does not have access to control such things. So researching GENERAL INDOOR GARDENING behooves us all.

Yeah, ph, ppm, temps none of that matter. That's basically what they're trying to argue when what they really mean is that they've gotten so used to their process, they don't pay nearly as much attention to those details as they did when they started out. Just a bad way of expressing that.

I don't overtly disagree with anything in your first post. I think if someone starting out tried their best to adhere to those guidelines, they would succeed.

As for the arguments about this piece of equipment or this practice being unncessary, I would say such statements can be true, but only conditionally. If you've been at it so long, you can do it by sight and smell, that's fine, but that's not the norm, it's the exception.

Plants have a range of tolerance in their environmental conditions that will dictate whether they live or die. Within that range of tolerance is a smaller, more ideal range that will result in greater plant health and ultimately higher quality meds. These are the only facts no one can argue against.

I think there are two points of view, that of the grower growing for personal use only vs that of the grower who wants a disposable (as in disposable income) yield.

If I were the latter I guess I would be bending over backwards and making it a vocation. But I'm the former, to me it's just a hobby and I could easily just buy it instead of growing it. So I'm into simplicity and a minimum of complications. I want systems that are forgiving and have wide tolerances for error. That's what I have and yeah, I've done it enough to have it dialed in. BUT, I threw all the complexity out (feeding tubes, ppms, res changes and flushes and blah blah blah) not because I had mastered them but because, early on, I recognized them as unnecessary and in some cases just a racket for the promotion of the huge pot growing equipment industry.

No, that's not what i am trying to argue at all :) And i didn't measure anything when i grew my first ever plant other than ph which i continue. There i no universal necessity as suggested, it's as simple as that :) For a grower, new, or experienced, there is no necessity for a tds meter, or a water chiller, unless their individual situation demand them. That is the point being argued :) For his grow a water chiller is a must, i can happily accept that, but stating that for "any" hydro grow is simply incorrect :)

Would you advise a beginner to not measure anything? Why don't you write your own book that says to disregard measuring nutrient?

I don't think a newbie has to measure anything other than how much of what he adds to the water, and the air temperature. In fact, I know that to be true.

I agree. Much of the marketed gear is hype and not truly needed.

I'm a micro-grower shooting for utmost quality. I'm not out to grow tons and tons to sell for a profit. It's those large-volume guys that cut corners and don't give a shit about quality. They don't measure, they don't dry properly, they overnute. And this is what you're buying at the shops.

You guys can all go about your ways, but there are levels of quality that people who don't measure or monitor aren't aware of. The large scale growers know damned well they're cutting corners... so I can guarantee they're growing their personal stock differently. That's how I would do it. Fuck the shit I'm selling, I ain't gonna be the one smoking it. Now my personal stuff on the other hand is grown in this separate, smaller room where I actually watch it! You better believe that's how the big commercial guys do it.
