Ok so I cant see your link without creating an account but im familiar with what it is.

Typically a single 288 board wants to be lighting a 2x2 space in flower and around 18" away, you may get closer with some strains.
That's assuming its 120-135w .

Since your space is less than 4 square feet you would want to dim to 2rds and stay at that distance.
Obviously you cant afford that amount of space between plant and light. So the best option would be to run more boards at a softer rate (lower current) That will allow them to be closer to your plants substantially.

Or run a bunch of 2ft strips.

What is the price of that set up?

thanks for your reply Corey, yeah I was afraid that this might be ... too hot.

I can't quite figure out a simple rule to follow for strips in a small box. I'm a smart guy but this really is science to get right, and I dont have that much cash to invest poorly.

how many watts/lumens or strips would be good for a single plant? in a small box like mine. Ive seen anywhere from 50-150watts led setups but strips im having a hard time to grasp the rule of thumb

Anything we would recommend on here you would want 30w per square foot. So 75w range would be good for your space.

The issue isn't the heat, its the tight packed diode count at close range, that's why more boards or using strips works better.

I know people like @diggs99 who runs 2ft cree J series strips can get 6" inch away from his plant tops. Where I running boards typically have to run 18" away, though can get closer.

The trick would be to use more and not the minimum amount of strips or boards. Powered hard means more distance needed so must be avoided.

I still don't know what the price for that set up your looking at is but you may find two boards running real soft you will not need the heat sink and you will not need the 120w driver.

You might find that means you can afford two boards on their own and then buy a smaller driver like a meanwell xlg 100 , which should be cheaper , without the extra cost and weight of the heatsink and by sourcing the driver local it might still be in your price range.

As an example you can buy QB v1 boards local (if your in US) for $29 and the driver should cost around that too, that probably comes in $90 range .
Like I say, I don't know what those kits sell for on ali express so maybe that's more than you have budgeted.

As far as strips go, you can google LEDgardener strip builds and he will show designs for 2x2 space and list various strips worth using including part numbers .

Edit, when I said may find you wont need a heatsink , I mean you will not need one.

amazing - a direction to continue my search! I'm free of this silly idea now :) THANKS!

Good post Corey, as usual, always on point bud.

Ya i can actually keep my lights within 1-2" with damn near perfect lux across the canopy if i really wanted to, i dont for fear of plants meeting diodes lol.

I have had a bud grow within 1/2" without issue, not even the slightest sign on stress.

Dont wanna complicate things for op but:
With that little headroom is there a point recing sidelighting this box instead of top lighting it?

Vesta strips are nice if you want a good deal of control of stretch: you get 2 channels, 5000k and 2700k.

hypothetically, since i'm still deciding on some 2f LED Bars or a QB:
what about if I was to buy 2 standard LM301B QB's, and connect it to a 120w meanwell driver, would they split the power? meaning about 60w each? would that let the canopy move closer then the standard 12"?

Maybe a silly question, but I don't live in Canada anymore, so my options are limited, and im focusing the few honest and good deals on Aliexpress/Alibaba. I have less choice then everyone else :'(, unless I want to fork up serious shipping costs.

Yes, you could run two boards, at 60w each, on a 120w driver. But honestly, with only 3 feet of headroom, I wouldn't be looking at boards unless they're low diode-density boards like HLG's QB120/QB132. Strips are really your best bet though. Not sure what kind of strip options there are on Alibaba, but I imagine there must be some.

Yeah that was kind of what I meant.
You still would dim it. But yeah buy two boards from where ever is best for you. You might find it easier on Alibaba than AliExpress.

I think you mentioned Poland? It might be worth looking at ledtech.de who make pretty much the same thing but in Germany!

Oh, and I can't see you using 120w in that space anyway. I'd be looking for 80-100 watts, max - unless you expect to upsize your space in the future, and want a light that can handle it.
