LOL check out my ghetto refector I made...

I had never really done sheet metal, let alone pop rivets before, but I wanted this shape and had to figure out the measurements. So I made a card stock mock-up first and messed with the measurements till it looked right. It ended up being about 24" long X 17" wide and about 9-10" tall. The hardest was figuring out the measurements for the top and sides. Top was 12" X 8.5" then the long sides were 10" down and the wide sides were 11", although they may have needed to be the same. ::shrug:: On the inside I had to add an extra 1 inch kick out to get the bulb centered right. (It actually looks a little better now, I cleaned it really good and took off all the marker lines.)

So I only ended up saving about $40 and if I could have done it over again I would have just saved up another couple weeks and ordered one lol. I guess it just depends on how broke you are though. I'll post pics of it hung up if anyone wants to see it in all it's ghetto glory. Peace. =)

I'm still wondering if maybe I should paint it white...but after the debacle of getting the hardware back on it and re-hung...I'll just get a real hood eventually lol. =)

looks good man sheet metal and pop rivets nothin wrong with that very handy if your tight on money and want better results sooner than you can afford....heres a quick little reflector i put together...(not tryin to hijack ur thread or anything hell urs looks more well thought out than mine i just went for it with mine)

^^^ Nice man! I like that shape for a CFL, and holy CFL that thing is huge! How many watts/rated is that bad boy? =D

Nice job! I tend to DIY even if I don't save much because I learn more and there is a greater feeling of achievement when you do it yourself. Anybody can just plunk down a credit card... ;)
The last reflector I built was a bat wing, major pain but couldn't find one the size I wanted. What type of light did you install in it?

I'm all about the ghetto / DIY especially if it involves reuse/recycle. I made some similar reflectors - but I must say yours look nicer!
I just recently returned to RIU after a long hiatus and will be posting my updated perpetual grow cab sometime this next week - stop by if you have a chance :)

Thanks man itsa (Sunlite 85 watt 6500k) and thats actual wattage not what its compared to it was a warehouse light lol but its bright as hell!

very nice hoods guys. brownbearclan have you thought about putting a 4 inch hole in the top of your hood and adding a inline fan and ducting? i think i may my own hood now. thank you for the inspiration. and where's those pix you talked about id like to see them.

I agree, this is very inspirational. I'm going to have to give a basic hood a try, but I definitely want to try attaching a few 4in fans and making an air-cooled hood. Maybe after the second go around.

I might eventually take it down and cut a 6" hole in the opposite side that the bulb connects and put a hose w/inline fan on it. Just depends on if my balast upgrade kit ends up making it too hot or not. =)

OH and on a side note if anyone decides to bend up this much sheet metal, go to harbor freight and buy yourself a cheap SEAMER. It looks like a pair pliers with big long plates where it grips. It makes it simple to do the small edge bends. I was going to buy the tool ( It was like $8-9) but cheaped out and didn't. Wish I would have though after all that bending!

And last thing I found out that to make nice straight bends, mark the line then score it with a box cutter on the outside of the bend then use a kitchen counter or whatever to bend it.

Awesome I'm actually gonna attempt to build that exact thing today except with a slightly longer middle piece so I can put a bulb at both ends! =D

Yes I agree, your hood is way beyond ghetto . . . very nice job on that considering you didnt have it machined or anything. I thought making one out thin metal, as I need a unique shape for my room, but opted to build an easy one: its made from thin aluminum pans, mylar, and duct tape . . .
